Default little off topic but...

Mac vs. Windows

a little history.

years ago, Bill Gates started DOS in his garage. He was mainly trying to compete with them IBM folks.

In the mean time, Jobs(Steve) was making stuff in his house too. His vision:

WINDOWS...instead of typing a command word in, he said, I am going to create something that you can see with "pictures"

so, Gates found out about Jobs and invested his money into Jobs company but still thought it was too much. Nobody would want to pay that much for a pricier MAC. DOS was going to be the way of the future.

But Jobs was onto something and he made it big, he made Gates rich. But Macs were still expensive...

Gates then said to himself, "self, why don't I try to create a Windows type of thing but make it cheaper."

but instead of making a brand new program,he created his windows with DOS.

So, basically,in a nutshell, this is why a MAC is better than PC.

Everytime Jobs creates a new OS, you can bet that he starts it from scratch and try to make it as advance yet backwards compatible as he could.

Everytime Gates creates a new OS, it isn't new, he just builds on DOS over and over again.

it's like this. Jobs takes a shower each day and wears brand new clothes.

Gates don't take showers but wears brand new clothes each day...

dar you go folks, why folks should get a Mac if they can afford it...

and I am with Jo55 about spending an extra $100.00 for brand new laptop.

personally, getting an old laptop just isn't worth it these days when one can get a low-end laptop for about almost the same price that is far superior.

Just MHO...

Just to clarify, a refurbished Apple product means refurbished by Apple themselves to a perfected, sometimes better than new condition. These units come with a full warranty and do qualify for extended warranties and user assistance.

I would never consider buying any computer or high-end electronic from eBay. I got burned when eBay first came out and learned my lesson.

Mwa, Gates's genius is not in the development of software, it was in his aggressive marketing strategy of getting the major manufacturers on board with his exclusivity agreement. He's just a common copycat with uncommon marketing savvy.

The refurbished one I bought was a Gateway - refurbished by them -I could look at the records on the Gateway site of what was upgraded on it.

But I bought it from a local reseller - they did give me restore disks {after I asked} & a 90 day warranty{ it worked fine for the 90 days LOL}.
But it just has some general odd issues and we have to reinstall the xp pro and all the correct drivers every other month...
So it's not reliable for saving or storing anything important.

It's just that it is still a used machine and the prices of new ones have come down to some very affordable levels.

We bought a couple laptops which were refurbished on eBay. They came with warranties and we have had no trouble with them. We bought from a reputable seller. We also look to see if the seller is in the business not just trying to unload his computer.

I think Bill Gates is a very shrewd businessman He seen opportunity knocking and took advantage of it.

I love Apple's products...until Jobs left, then the company did some stupid things. When they got rid of Motorola, I thought they were crazy...

but, Jobs came back and intel seems to be doing them justice and if I can convince da wife, our next puter will be a MAC again.

If it is refurbished MAC from Apple themselves, I am all for it. Their tech support is top notch...

I don't care much for Ebay myself but I know that there are good apples vs bad apples on ebay (puns intended)

If I was to buy a laptop currently, I really have to say that I would not buy a used one. A low-end HP laptop is $300.00 when it's on sale and only a $100.00 more when not on sale. Just do a search on their website.

HP CURRENTLY makes the best PC laptops in my humbled opinion. Gateway was tops 10 years ago then replaced by Dell but when Mike Dell left the company, it went downhill again. He came back last year but that company have some serious restructuring to do...I dumped all their stocks recently and went with HP

and nappy, agreed! LOL

Gates IS a savvy business man. Smart in his networking with people and
selling CARP that is worth $10.00 for $500.00

but that's marketing...years ago, I was involved with marketing, worked with a company called, "Amazing Discoveries"

not sure if anyone remembers that grand daddy of informercials or not. One of the products that they promoted was called, DD7...

years later, when I saw "OxyClean" I said to myself, now, that is some serious repackaging, they are selling the SAME worthless crap but are now calling it Oxyclean...LOLOL

so whenever I get to tawk PC vs. MAC, I think of DD7 and OxyClean...LMAO...

anyways, my next puter will be a MAC

I do want to say this though. If one is into upgrades and such, MACS are hard as heckit to upgrade (internal upgrades) cause they rather you buy a new one. But their puters are so advanced that it is usually two generations ahead of PC(well, maybe just ONE generation now)

the last thing I would suggest is to not let it overwhelmed you.

Stick to a tried and true company, avoid COMPAC puters, and look at your needs.

If you are just going to surf the net, email, blog, Youtube.
a low-end laptop will do just fine.

If you are into gaming like Allen, then, might want to ask him to build you one...that thing just looks too awesome...although I can say that I don't care for Vista...

alrighty, enough blabbering from me...LOL

Hey Moi, aren't Compaq and HP essentially the same? They joined forces a few years back. I had a company issued Compaq laptop and it was the biggest piece of junk that I ever used.

And Gateway was no walk in the park either. A co-worker had a Gateway desktop that made an awful grinding noise whenever he inserted a floppy disk. He took it to the local Gateway store and the "techs" just looked at him like he was crazy. So no warranty service from Gateway.

eh steve ole chap! Good to "see" ya!

yes, Compaq and HP merged BUT...

they have let Compaq run its own low end production of puter while HP started to restructure.

5 years ago, I would not even consider an HP, today, at least the last I checked, their puter is the current king when compared to the big brands like Sony, Dell, Gateway, Toshiba.

4 years ago, Toshiba was the tops then they went downhill. And Dell was on top before that and Gateway before them.

But, in each company's own spectrum, they offer high end/low end and such and Dell's high ends are pretty good still. Their XPS system is still top notch. I rarely get clients with XPS systems. It is their business class that I get most often.

I recommend HP to my current clients when they want a low-mid grade laptop. I always try to recommend MACs but I might go out of business.

I wouldn't touch the following currently as of 07-24-08. LOL please remember that these are my personal list, doesn't reflect other views(always feel like I have to make disclaimers now...)

Sony, (yuck all over)
Gateway (their high end desktop is decent from what I've heard)
Dell's low ends to about mid end and their business class ones I'd steer away from....their high ends I would consider but for that money, I'd get a MAC...maybe Mike Dell can save the company. Whenever a retired CEO has to come back and restructure the company, it isn't good thing at first...but might turn out to be something better later...

COMPAC, NEVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! unless they do something very serious, but I highly doubt it...

Toshiba, maybe in a couple of years, heard they are trying something...we'll see...

but currently for the price, quality, bang for the buck PC laptops, I personally have been recommending HP and my clients have been happy and I am OK with it. (I fix puters on the side for extra pocket dough to take da wife out once in awhile)

well, there are just so many products on the market and with technology, it's always changing, so who knows what'll happen tomorrow??

And Murry's law no longer applies about every 16 month the speed doubles, they are saying it is about 1/4 of that time now...scary...I am already looking at terabyte stuff for upgrading....

Default new laptops

I would highly recommend the ones below.
It's made by a new company: Pla Synta
it is consider the organic laptops. No plug ins but requires some "feeding" time.

It also requires game time to communicate and some nap time so it won't crash...pretty nifty...

*handing mwa his ritalin and a glass of water*

Take it, now! And no cheeking it!

WHOT????? I don't know what tree your Apple fell off of, but my 7 Macs (starting with that whopper 64k hard drive that cost more in '86 than this here MacBook) have always practically upgraded themselves! Every week it goes on a little hunt and tells me it wants to be fed new, good stuff.

As far as RAM, it is true that their pre-installed prices are off the charts but it's so easy to do oneself, it's just dumb not to. Example: I'm running a MacBook with RAM maxed out. If I had paid the Apple price for it installed, it would have cost me 5 bills. So, for 2 bills, I bought the same brand of RAM chips and invested two sheets of paper and the ink to print the Apple website's tutorial, and 20 minutes with my fumbling fingers later, done. This act of contempt did not interfere with my warranty (as if I need one) in any way.

I'm half looking at the next great adventure myself, it's a toss-up between the new MacBook and a little jaunt in an easterly direction. We'll see!
