Thank you for posting the links; they're useful...

... only, being dependent on anti-virus, anti-spyware, anti-whatever software to keep up-to-date on the definitions supplied still leaves us at a disadvantage. They must be on top of the prob., or acting in anticipation, in order to provide the latest defnitions.

Saturday, I was told as I was told 10 years ago when viruses (sp? - the plural) brought my ol' computer to a screeching halt: No protection software is 100 percent failproof.

I never expected that a news site would be the spreader of malware, but that was the last site I visited and my machine crashed completely.

I'll likely never know the name of the malware, since a post-mortem on the machine is not looking very probable at this point.

If someone has the time, energy and skill to craft a malicious application, I wonder what the heck is wrong inside that person's mind that leads him/her to cause such destruction to people who have never caused them a day's harm. Pigs!

From here on out, I'm only visiting sites that have created no probs. for my computer(s) in the past. Until sites can guarantee that destructive codes are not embedded, I'll stay away.

As I mentioned in a different thread, all of my anti- whatever software apps. are up-to-date. It didn't matter.

Oh i should add the Threatfire info here too.

Threatfire program - free
works along with your anti Virus/Anti spyware programs

http://www.threatfire.com/

[If I already have antivirus software why do I need ThreatFire?

ThreatFire is dramatically different to traditional antivirus software. Normal antivirus products usually need to have first identified and seen a threat before they can provide adequate protection against it. The protection is then provided via a signature or fingerprint update, which must first be written by an antivirus researcher. This creates a large window of time where threats are undetected and can therefore infect your PC even when you have antivirus software installed.
How can ThreatFire protect me when traditional antivirus can't?

ThreatFire continually protects your PC against attacks by detecting malicious behavior, such as capturing your keystrokes or stealing your data, instead of only looking for known threats like normal antivirus software.
By implementing sophisticated real-time behavioral analysis ThreatFire is able to stop never- before-seen "zero-day" threats solely by detecting their malicious activity.

Zero-day threats are usually designed to take advantage of new vulnerabilities or exploits that are currently unprotected by traditional security products.

They are usually distributed in huge quantities very quickly by mass email (SPAM), website hijacks, instant messaging or over peer-to-peer networks. Because they are undetectable they are able to wreak havoc and compromise your PC even when you have up-to-date antivirus software installed.

ThreatFire's patent-pending ActiveDefense technology offers protection against all types of internet threats - both known and unknown - spyware, adware, keyloggers, viruses, worms, Trojans, rootkits, buffer overflows, and other malware. ThreatFire uses its unparalleled protection to hunt down and paralyze those threats that are either too new or too clever to be recognized by traditional "signature-based" antivirus software.]

One would think that the FBI would want to get on board and put these crazy people out of business.

When we were on the phone with Radial Point and he was getting rid of the Antivirxp08, Alan got on the other end and asked the guy:

"Do you report this to the FBI, and what are they doing about it"??

The tech guy laughed and said 'These are little matters to the FBI, they have much more important things to do".

So I gather it's up to us to learn how to delete this stuff, and to find out which websites are safe and which are not.

I think it's appalling that, in a room somewhere (IN MANY ROOMS), there are people sitting in front of computers, trying to hack into our stuff, get our passwords, bank accounts, personal information, FOR THEIR PERSONAL GAIN!!!

If they spent half as much energy going out and getting A REAL JOB!!, they wouldn't have to steal from anyone!!

Just my opinion.

But criminals will do what criminals do. Won't they??

unfortunately, virus creators live in different regions of the world.

There are not international laws so the crack down is all up to whatever region it is in.

I've read somewhere that Russian remains the highest concentration of spyware/malware creators and they don't have a lot of regulations there.

On top of that, a lot of these virus/spyware propellers are teenagers that are bored outta their minds...

until there are better regulations, I am afraid everyone's best bet is to continue to arm themselves up...TO THE MAX...
