I have done it the way ZombieSlayer posted for more times then I care to count and it works, if you spill something on your board, turn it off ASAP and then pop all keys off and go through the steps he outlined above, it can just save your keyboard.

Also this company is pretty cool:

Well, I popped off a key or 2 last night and this was my reaction....

Lord love a duck!...my keyboard is filthy!! I mean f i l t h y.

A q-tip with alcohol isn't even gonna touch that grime!

Kinda like taking a big, old boot off a big, smelly foot, Aye?? Let me ask you, did you give it a sniff??? See, now that's what I'm talking about. Could take it to the do it yourself CarWash. But I think my WaterPik showerhead would do a nice job too.

Grasp keyboard with one hand on each side, carefully pick up keyboard and turn it so that keys are facing you, shake rapidly from side to side, watch in amazement what falls out. Turn keyboard so keys are again facing up and give a light shake then turn keyboard so that keys face downward and shake vigorously and watch in amazement what else falls out and listen as the stuff that is too big rattles inside the keys themselves. Turn keyboard so that once again the keys are facing up and all the big stuff falls back into the keyboard then rapidly turn keyboard so keys face down then up, down then up, down then up. When tired and figure that is about as good as it is gonna get then set keyboard down with great satisfaction and call it all good. Repeat this about once every 6-12 months.

wow, toast and....is that popcorn

Default Y'all did know...

that all the keys except the big ones like your enter key and shift and space bar pop off right? That way you can clean all the keys fairly easily and clean undersneath as well. Getting them all back on in the correct location is fun. I use Q-Tips and soapy water to clean in between the ones that don't pop off. Also, this particular KB I have I can put in the tub and wash it. Due to mineral content the final rinse is done with distilled water. Don't set the KB in water just get it wet, use a bit of soap and some type of scrubby and go to town on it. The newer KB's can also be placed in the top rack of your dishwasher believe it or not. I haven't tried that one myself but have talked to a fellow techie that does this. *shrug* I believe you would place it keys down as much as possible.

Default Skc

Hi, I keep Germ-X Hand sanitizer right next to the computer for easy access.
I can't raise my hand to the smelly keyboard class, darn it. We could call it
SKC and hold meetings in secret locations around the world!

I'm easily amused anyway. Doodle bug7

huh... interesting... my keyboard only has a slight plastic smell...

for cleaning, i prefer to use a cotton ball with rubbing alcohol... i find it cleans better than a q-tips... once a month, normally, except if i have a cold, then i'll do it every day...
i normally wash my hands before touching the keyboard... rarely eat at the computer desk, except dry fruits and nuts/almonds...

for crumbs, hairs, dust... i'll shake it upside down... then i'll use either the hairdryer at cold or the vacuum cleaner with the brush attachement... for the first time with my new 10 months old keyboard, i used a dust destroyer can... amazingly, more hairs came off... some were mine... some were dog ones (i had dogs for a few months this year)...

the same way, i also clean my mouse !!! and my telephone !!!

once, i spilled coffee in it... i'll be right back with the coffee story...
