Compaq CLAIMS I can use the CD I have I just need to pay them and they will intruct me.
They say I should have known to do back up restore CD's when I bought this dang thing. SO I am at a loss and about ready to give up... I have searched the web over and over and I can't find the HOW TO |
Geez, scary stuff.
My son is still asleep or I'd ask him. (early Thurs. morn. in au.) When all this happened with my Compaq, they told me the same thing. I should have done the backups to cds myself as soon as I could. Well, I hadn't and it really annoys me that they expect people to do that themselves anyway. The disc that came with my Compaq could only be used ONCE for some reason. My son tried to use it and it didn't work... corrupted, something. So then I was stuck with the Compaq CD which wouldn't work and no backups. I asked him quickly yesterday what we ended up doing and he couldn't really remember, but I think we ended up totally clean intalling Windows XP and having to start afresh. I'm so sorry you're having these problems. At this point in time I'd probably be happier to pay someone else to help you do it than Compaq. I can't believe they want to charge you to help. You're probably sick and tired of all this by now, but here's a site in case you need to clean install Windows XP http://www.winsupersite.com/showcase...p_sg_clean.asp ugh, good luck. |
Just had a thought. You still have all the books that came with it???
I've got mine somewhere but they're boxed up. I'll try to find them, but can't get to them until later this morning. All my books are still in storage in someone's garage. |
I just read where you said "Guess I just go to add/remove programs and DELETE all and anything with the word windows in it...."
I wouldn't do that!!! If you're going to do a clean install it's a waste of time. |
Thanks
I am reading all info posted. Lara, Yes I still have my books but ya know NOT one of them gives me a thing I need...lol go figure. What really ticks me off is a few relitives of mine KNOW how to do this but can't find them when you need them... |
How're you doing? I saw your name there as I came to the site a couple mins. ago. Just wondered where you're up to and what you're going to do.
|
Thanks for asking Lara.
I am still reading and pecking away to get my puter back to normal. Question tho... WHen I download the framedyn.dll where to I save it at.. Does it matter |
I make a download file - for on my desktop and send all downloads to it
then I can always find them easy then you can copy it to the windows file?? I don't know if it needs to be in a specific place in that? I think there is a .dll section?? and it might need to be in that. |
hhmmnn, I just looked and I don't have framedyn.dll in the dllcache on my compaq either.
Anyway, This is from a spybot forum where someone was having same problem. http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=668&page=2 framedyn.dll error message FIX 1. Click Start, and then click Run. 2. In the Open box, type %systemroot%\system32\dllcache, and then click OK. In that folder that opens up look to see if you have a file named "framedyn.dll" If you dont then you need to download it first by going to this site http://www.driverskit.com/dll/framedyn.dll/852.html and downloading it. In the middle of the screen there is a blue link that sais "framedyn.dll Download" in blue text click on it and it will say that its extracting the file. Wait until it is finished and it will give you the option to save it to your hard drive. Do so and then after the file is done downloading to the location you have it set to download it to drag that file into the folder called "dllcache" that is the one that opens up after you completed step 2 above. 3. Right-click framedyn.dll, and then click Copy on the shortcut menu that appears. 4. Click Start, and then click Run. 5. In the Open box, type %systemroot%\system32\wbem, and then click OK. 6. On the Edit menu, click Paste. If you are prompted to replace the existing file, click Yes. |
I'll post there here for now. I want to check it out. Just woke up. Need to wake up to check it out better.

I thought we might need to send out a search party. I see you are online now, so I'm very pleased to see that. I had hoped you were not without computer. |
Have you run your self diagnostic? My xp always repairs itself that way. Good wishes!
|
Ok, I may be a bit late to the party but I have to chip in here.
The reason you are not being allowed by your computer to reinstall Windows is because the disk you have is old. Stating what you already know, I know, but there is a reason. Microsoft stopped supporting older versions of Windows XP. The version you have on disk is one of the older, unsupported versions. In order to get security and critical updates, you must have a minimum of what's called, 'Service Pack 2' usually abbreviated to SP2 - this is one a range of updates rolled out by Microsoft since the development of Windows XP. Your computer, over time, will have gradually been updated - the first major update to Windows XP was Service Pack 1 (SP1). For a long time, a person could update their computer from a very early version of XP, then Microsoft would only allow critical updates for users who had SP1 installed. This went on for a time until we get to the current stage where only SP2 is supported. This all works fine if you have kept your computer updated and do not have the early version of XP. If unfortunately, you try to install from a very early version, your computer will not get updates. So, it is not a good idea to format the HD or remove Windows XP from your system. To your original problem with the dialup ... often, when you phone up these helplines they tell you any old nonsense just to get you off the phone; 'reinstall the ISP software' reinstall Windows, reinstall the chair you're sitting on, whatever. Don't fall for it. They have a limited time to deal with customers and they MUST deal with them within that time. If they fail to do so it means their performance is slipping, ergo, they want you off the phone so they will tell you any old rubbish about reinstalling whatever because they know it will take hours to do it and they will probably be finished their shift by the time you get back on the phone. |

However to get updates, you do have to run the validation tool and you really do need sp2 to avoid LOTS of extra updates. I always run sp2 after I've finished the installation of xp so I have a working firewall and then add a/v and a real firewall. Then I go for the other updates. But bottom line, unless the cd has a scratch in it or something, any version of xp can be installed with or without sp2. Microsoft just discontinued updates on the version without sp2 installed.
