Default HTML codes for Side Bar

Hi,

I am reading in my HTML web design book and I cannot for the life of me figure out the the correct sequence of codes for a web page's sidebar. I made a grahic for the side bar and put in the TR brackets but nothing is happening. I tried putting the side bar graphic in the body but that only covered the whole page. My mind is going nuts trying to figure out all the correct HTML codes for a side bar. Could anyone give me an example of the codes in their entirety?

Thanks,
befuddled2
