Thumbs up update...

I bought the DVD from Amazon. It arrived today.

It is stunning. And very good sound, and only $13.

It is really nice on my computer. My son is going to rip it using some MAC program he found. He didn't want me to download anything...said it is "risky" since these are the types of programs that may be used for hacking/trojans etc.

Thank you to everyone for your help and ideas. I really appreciate your counsel.

Thumbs up more...

I just have to come back and say on this thread:

I am watching the bonus features today.

They are just amazing. Hayley's wonderful teacher, her lovely family! She shares her mother's beautiful eyes, and it is clear that this family is really exceptional. The beautiful voice does come from a beautiful heart.

It is times like this that I regret not having a daughter myself!
At least I can vicariously watch from a distance.

AMYTHING ON THE INTERNET IS RISKY. HECK JUST TURNING ON YOUR COMPUTER IS RISKY. THERE ARE MANY WAYS ON THE INTERNET TO GET MUSIC WITHOUT PAYING FOR IT.

USING A PEER TO PEER CAN BE RISKY IF YOU GO SEARCHING FOR THE WRONG THINGS. ITS TO BAD YOU HAVE TO WAIT FOR WHAT YA WANT AS IT IS OUT THERE FOR THE USING.

If you were a creator of a copyright or holder/owner of the work and depended on its sales and fees to make a living, you wouldn't have the same opinion. I know what I'm saying may not stop anyone from downloading illegally but at least know what you're doing when you do it.

In other words, do what you will but don't have any illusions that you're not hurting people and their ability to make a living -- you are.

I totally agree with you regarding those sort of copyright issues however what we were talking about originally on this thread, is copying one song from a DVD bought and owned by same someone, and using their own computer which they bought and own and to copy 1 song from the DVD onto their own CD to listen to in their own car.

All my investigations with copyright for this issue in my country appear to allow that. The only problem I see is if someone circumvented any Technological Protection Measures which the DVD may have and in my country that is still a somewhat controversial issue because it can also prevent legitimate use... e.g. educational purposes, fair dealing and personal use.

As I say, I'm not sure how it works in other countries, but I checked and re-checked when I suggested the programme to mrsD originally.

Yes, what you said is right, Lara. My response was specifically speaking to the tangent the thread branched out to, illegal downloading.

Oh, great -- now I have to go back and read the whole thread again more carefully, LOL! But what you said in the post below mine is correct. Under copyright law, you are allowed to copy it for your own personal use. If you want to get technical, it's one time...but the truth is, we all know that it's not that CD in the second car that's the crux of the problem!

Lol.

I can remeber in the 70's and 80's buying my cassetes carrying them around with me and sharing them with all my friends.

I still have one of my portable cassete players that has dual decks i can record from one to the next. We were never told then that we couldnt share,

corporate greed is why there is this whole copywrite/peer to peer sharing is bad thing started.

If i purchase something with my own money i have the right to share it with my friends. I do not have the right to copy and sekk them to my friends tho.

As all the world is now my friend i share what i can with them and they share back.

I do not make a profit from anything i share on the internet. As that is piracy.

If i download something for my own personal evaluation and delete it wwhen im done then i am a responsable downloader.

In our letigious society the rights of the users of the world wide web cannot be contorlled by any one government or company as it belongs to the world.

Re: cassettes, that's actually not the case. To try to combat the "problem" as these companies saw it, there was a tax levied on blank recordable materials that was then distributed to owners and creators.

The pricing of CDs is really only part of the problem. "Free" will always be more appealing to some than "cheap". The current state of affairs has many components to it and the biggest reason we're here can probably be attributed to the lack of foresight and obstinacy on behalf of the recorded music industry to find a viable solution -- and most specifically the RIAA.

The crux of the matter is distribution. If creators and owners choose to put their stuff up on the internet, that's one thing but it is quite another for someone else to do it who does not have that right. It is not up to a user to determine whether to put something up on the internet and make the decision that something "belongs to the world". It is the call of the owners and creators, not the general public. Same reason pertains to why there are guidelines here on NT and other places on the internet for printed materials.
