Default Question about an eMachine

Hi.

I have two 80 year old italian people who live downstairs. I do speak italian but not on their level. They called me down yesterday to see why their scanner would not scan properly. The man knows what he's doing, the woman never touched a computer in her life.

I do not know eMachines., I have an HP Pavillion myself.

But I gave it a shot.

Everything was hooked up. But I did notice, the scanner was not plugged into the back of the printer, but it was plugged into the back of the computer tower. The printer was also plugged into the back of the computer tower.

Now is this the correct way to plug in a scanner.

The scanner they have is an HP ScanJet model 4200C (they also have a HPScanjet Model 3300C

Can an eMachine be connected to either of these scanners? What is the correct way to hook them up. They have no cd's or software discs at all. Just the scanjets.

When I went down there to see the eMachine, the monitor said "new hardware detected and when I went to my computer, printers and scanners, there was one of the scanjets (so that tells me it must be connected properly right?).

But when I put a photo in the scanjet. I clicked on "preview' and I got this error message saying "if the scanner is in use, please finish the project".

No matter which scanner we hooked up, it wouldn't scan anything. The scanner was plugged into the wall because it lit up when I picked up the top of the scanner.

Any help would be much appreciated.
By the way, the eMachine model number is T3104
Thanks much.

it sounds correct and it did "see" the scanner so there must be some other problem.
mine plugs into the tower also.

generally it doesn't matter much what brand the computer or scanner is.

the settings could be set wrong in the printer /scanner section of control panel.

I have 1 printer/ 1 printer/scanner/fax and a scanner so depending on which i might want to use as default - the correct one has to be set as default.

what is the Operating system ? Windows XP, Windows 2000 or older?

Okay, how do I check to see what operating system it has?

And how do I check the printer/scanner settings in the control panel?

Thanks
Melody

Also, I have just updated to Internet Explorer 7 on my Windows XP HP pavillion. Now I don't have the favorite places on the left side of my screen.
I have to click on the star on the left side and it brings up the favorites.

Is there anything I can do to keep the favorites on the left side of the screen and have them there all the time?

Thanks.
Melody

the easiest way is right click on my computer- then go to -properties
the general tab should tell that info.
or go to control panel - systems - and the same thing will pop up

for printer/scanner settings go to that section in the control panel and right click on the printer or scanner that is displayed for the preferences & properties and check to see which is set as default
make sure the one you want to use is set as default

for your IE7- I think just go to view/toolbars/customize?
maybe someone else knows it better - i don't use it-
I use the Netscape or Mozilla Firefox browsers.

Ugh,I did something wrong, and now there is no File, View, Edit thing on the top of my screen.

When I look at anything while i am on the internet, there is no File, edit, etc. etc. way up at the top.

How do I bring this back. I absolutely hate this Internet Explorer 7.

thanks

you might have hit the full screen button?
But if nothing at all shows up top- no icons or anything?
maybe you screen size was changed or settings on your monitor- does does screen seem centered or off center?

my monitor has a auto button to refresh the screen/view on the front - but only rarely do i need to use it.

2 free - well known browsers - and safer and faster than IE
if you download them them click to install them - you can import your IE favs and such to them.
http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/
http://browser.netscape.com/ns8/

I make a downloads folder on my desktop - and send all downloads to it. so I can find them and they are organized.

Alan would never touch anything on the monitor, he doesn't know how. And I never touched it either. But on the top of the new IE7, there are no File, edit, view, etc. etc.

And I still can't see my favorites on the left side of the screen.

oh my.

LIfe is good again. I found a little button on the right side called Tools.
I found a menu thing. I fixed everything.

Thanks so much.

Default first system

My first system I had to connect the scanner to the printer and the printer to the tower; or was it visa versa?
That is at least I remember them not both being plugged into the tower...it was a pathway through one to the other. One was somehow in the middle. But that was in 1999.
