Default E-mail won't come through on laptop

Hi!
I have a new laptop which I love but how do I get e-mail to come through on it?

I check e-mail on the desktop and there is always a bunch but save them for DH and then check the laptop and it's empty??

We thought this would be nice for me to check mail while DH is gaming on the other but it isn't working. Any free advice because my guru charges $30.00 and hour minimum.

Thanks!

What email client are you using when you collect email on your desktop computer? For example, if you're getting email by using Outlook Express, once you download it on one machine, you won't find it "pending" on a second machine (like your laptop).

If you could tell me what you're using on your primary machine (desktop), I might be able to help you.

I have outlook express on both and yesterday I got an e-mail on my laptop that I had sent to another friend. Maybe I should start sending e-mails through the laptop?

This laptop thing is all new to me so any advice is helpful and much appreciated. It didn't come with instructions just what the odd looking buttons are and some advice on what not to do so I am really in the dark here.

I am really dissappointed in Dell that they didn't include an instruction manual.

Yes , generally if you check email on the desktop and no new ones have arrived nothing will show up for the laptop to receive.
You can test it by sending an email from the desktop to yourself and then check for it on the laptop.

You can change a setting so the message stays on the email server for x days or such , so you can get the messages more than once , or on other computers. If you want to set it up that way let me know and I can help you with that. but you will tend to get duplicates if you check on both machines frequently.

here's the basic "how to" set up OE -
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/.../oe/setup.mspx
you must have that right since you have gotten an email now.

next thing is you should export/back up your desktop address book as a file so you can email it to the laptop. Just send it to your self and only check for it on the laptop.

or you can connect the 2 machines and copy the file over that way.
or if you have a flash drive or cd etc
- copy the address book to one of those and then add it to the laptop.
then use the laptop OE address book to import into the OE.

It may be the default set up in OE to send email addys not in the address book to the spam or junk folder. not sure on that.

I use Thunderbird email program but in some ways they are similar. It's been quite awhile since I installed and used OE to test something..

Do you have multiple email addresses for yourself ?
are they all added into the OE on the laptop?

basically, except for any special buttons, a laptop should work the same as a desktop.
Do you have the same OS {operating system}one both machines?
like windows XP or Vista?
Or is one XP and one Vista?

For me {a XP user with classic/customized appearance} Vista takes a little getting used to, just because how it looks, of extra click to OK stuff, and usually someone else's computer that I am helping them with -so it isn't set up like I prefer.

some advance/custom set up info for Outlook Express -
http://www.optimizingpc.com/install/...okexpress.html
http://www1.umn.edu/adcs/guides/emai...tlookexpress6/

Importing Items into Outlook Express
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/...importing.mspx

also under Help in your toolbar of OE you might find something I've missed. Or it might explain it better.

If you still have problems you can check the site of your email - yahoo, hotmail, gmail, Verizon etc??
they have tutorials were you can double check your settings for the OE email program.

Janie, I also recently bought a Dell, but they DID supply me with a manual. They've got a a website where you can contact them, and I'm sure if you sent them an email, they'd send you a manual. Either that or give you a link where you can access one on line.

They also have a help line if you have any problems.
