Heart In Honor of Martin Luther King

In honor of a man who was gunned down 40 years ago today - one who tried very hard to open the hearts of people and speak the truth. He is greatly missed.

Two years ago I went to Memphis.

I made a point of going to the Civil Rights Museum.

What an eye opening learning experience!!!!

If you ever get the chance to go... take it.

I was but a small baby when Mr. King was taken so I only knew what was taught in school which was not much. I learned so much that day. I will go back because I know there is more to learn.

Heart

I've never been there, but that memory is still so very fresh in my mind.

I was absolutely HORRIFIED when he was assassinated. He was the only person in my life who made sense when talking about the reason for all the hatred I was seeing in this world. Even worse, my neighbors (even church elders) REJOICED at his assassination!

I was only 8 when he came to Chicago. I begged my father to take me to see him in person, but he said I was too young. I cried when I saw how my city treated him, and I cried when I found out my neighbors were there throwing rocks at him and calling him a "monkey."

When I was old enough to cross major streets on my bike, I used to ride up to Marquette Park - just to remember what he tried to do here.

Here's an account of King's visit to my hometown...
