Heart Peculiar

There are a few of us,
Peculiar ones, who hope,
Embrace ourselves,
Cherish the ups and downs,
Keep holding hands,
Pushing out our borders,
And defying gravity.

We don’t set the balance
Of the teeter-totter one sided
Or even spit out the bitter in the cup
We get angry and bitchy
Obsessive and discouraged and depressed
And do crazy things for love.

Chronic pain and disease, grief,
Chemical imbalance,
Break ups and break downs
Can throw us in the air
No one said life is fair.

Yet there are still some of us
Who are peculiar,
Stubborn, rogues, knaves,
Broken cactuses and weeds
Still trying to learn and grow
Still singing in the rain
Still believing in God and grace
Falling down but never giving up.
