Are any of you published? I had one nonfiction published in '06, but it's been a lot tougher to break into fiction. I gotta admit, I could have tried harder.



I have set some goals though and found some markets and made some contacts.

I'm working on fiction and some horror short stories, trying to get them into emags (some are emags + print, but new markets, not big distributions or big $) for the time being. I'd like to get them in print, but having a tough time finding the right places to send them.

Anyhoo, I'd still be interested in trading tips with anybody who's into this sort of thing.

Good for you, Brain, saying it and actually doing it are often separated by a gulf of fear. Kudos, woman!

In my experience, smaller publishers with specific objectives have been more open to my fiction. My book is reported to be in the "short pile" which is a huge compliment to me (the alternative being the dumpster). I chose this one because it's a small house but has the mainstream distribution channels open to their products. That was an important factor. Also, I wanted to go with an independent name from my own state as a gesture of solidarity.

Are you most eager to sell or be read? Sometimes that helps us choose the venue.

There are a few good writers' groups out there as you mentioned, and most members are surprisingly generous with their experience and tips.

I used to write fiction when my boys were in gradeschool. The closest I got to publication was a polite denial letter from one publisher. I should try again someday, maybe look into nonfiction. One English teacher told me my rhetoric was powerful. He was also an attorney, and said he'd hate to be going against me in a divorce proceeding.

AMN - I have 4 big brothers, so it takes a LOT to intimidate me. It's the procrastintating that kills me.



I'm a putter-offer, and a slow poke, and a perfectionist. But I am not afraid of the rejection or the critiqueing.


To get paid or to get read? That's easy - to get read. Money is gone in a wink, but people will remember your words - in a good way or a bad way lol. The hard part for me is finding any market paying or not. They all say they look for new kids, but that's where ALL the new kids go...sigh.

And it's hard to get in those doors too, with all the competition. There is only room for so many stories, no matter how many are good. so it's hard to know which are good, and if any of those are mine.

Hard to believe so many people want to be writers. You'd think they'd all wanna be actors, musicians, something cool.



Which is okay. I got nothing better to do than fight for this if that's what I want - I got all this stubborn for a reason, right?

My DH wrote a fictional story and sent it to several agents but never got a bite.

We collaborate on the cartoon together which has its' own website because we sent the idea with several stories to around 30 agents and no one wanted it.

Now I'm writing a script screenplay. If anything it's entertaining to me and gives me something to do other than cleaning the toilet.

You might want to go to a bookstore like B&N and check out reference publications. I know there is a publication that lists all the agencies and what type of material they are looking for.

There's also writer's magazines which lists good info and resources.

I have a few poems published and I have three friends that have books published. a graphic novel,and a book of short stories, and one has 3 or 4 books of poems.It is much easier to self publish then submit your work to anyone.But costly too and you have to promote your book afterwards.
I write to deal and cope with issues and life and not to be famous or rich. It is more for me then for who reads it. Though I pray something I write and share helps another.

The woman who runs it says it's cool for me to send out invites.

The cool thing about it - other than hanging with other writers - is she has links to all kinds of paying writing gigs, contests, etc.

so it encourages me to write more, write better, and gives me places to to submit my stuff too.

And the people are very nice and helpful. It's not a HUGE membership yet, so it's easy to get to know the people who are there.

I know a few people who've self published. I can't come up with the money to di it, but cool for you! It has to be a blast holding your book in your hands, huh?



I was thinking of putting one on Amazon's Kindle reader. I know, nobody but people with money have the reader yet... but if anybody read and reviewed my book favorably, that would get me *out there*. Easier to get it in print.

It's just a thought. First I need a book to put on it, lol.
