Default The tongue is a funny muscle....

Well, it wasn't so funny yesterday. Have you LOOKED at your tongue lately? Well you should....LOL...I was cleaning my dentures, brushing my real lowers and flossing and brushing my gums and tongue and noticed that I felt like something was in the back of my tongue on my left side, so I got my gauze pad, got out a flashlight and a magnifying mirror....(at this time WISHING I was an octopus)....I was SHOCKEd to see these 'things' like little round overgrown taste buds, some white, some red/black....so off to Webmd (HUGE MISTAKE)and I find the worst findings ever..my Son stopped by for a visit, I grabbed his hand, dragged him to the bathroom, got out another gauze pad and my 'tools', told him to stick out his tongue and looked at both sides of his, nice, red and normal. Now he thinks I'm MORE nuts than usual...LOL..he's 20 and adorable..so on the phone I went to my neighbor who is in the dentistry field, she seemed to think it was maybe Thrush, which if basically a yeast infection of the mouth...ICK....of course my mind went right off to Oral Melanoma...did you KNOW that is something you can have? I didn't, I have skin cancer spots that I had taken care of this past summer, but had NO IDEA of this newly befriended muscle and what can happen to it.....so I called the Dentist ASAP and put out an SOS.....I tossed and turned all night....now to add to my story, my mother was just diagnosed this week with pancreatic cancer.......so this explains my awful paranoia at this point....so without telling the hubby nor my sister who is with my Mom....the dentist called this a.m. and had me come right in....he took a look and smiled that wonderful smile of 'oh, you poor thing' and said 'it is nothing, it is NORMAL that this muscle is reacting with these hightened blood vessels' and he gave me the lowdown on the tongue. Amazing muscle, mine is a 'curious tongue' meaning it is SOOOO busy making friends with my new dentures and after all it has been through, the blood vessels have come up to the top...it is not Thrush, as he explained I would KNOW that it was thrush as it would look like my tongue may need a shave...LOL.... BUT he said it is a good thing to get use to my tongue, that it SHOULD be looked at by each of us, and by our dentist..that should be another thing dentists teach young ones along with brushing and flossing and what to look for.....so, bottom line is I'm good, got more adjustments on my dentures and my curious tongue STILL continues to try and make friends with them...LOL....no matter HOW I try to curb it...LOL....just wanted to share this funny enlightning story with you all....
