Hi! I can't seem to find any information about this, but I am wondering if there is any reason to believe a pregnancy could cause dental implant failure? I have 4 upper implants supporting an overdenture, and would like to have a baby, but I am concerend if the pregnancy will affect the integrity of the implants. The implants have been in place for 1 1/2 years. Thanks!

I've been in dentistry for 30 yrs and I personally do not know of any public studies that have been done regarding dental implants and pregnancy. But if you find one please post it here!

Dental implants are similar to other prosthetic implants that are made from titanium......like the knees, hips, etc. If your dental implants are integrated securely in the jawbone and there is no evidence of infection with any of them, then I would think there would be no contraindications during a pregnancy.

Have you discussed this with your dentist and physician?

Hi! I will be asking my dentist in a couple of weeks, but wanted to see if I should be avoiding pregnancy until then. It doesn't make sense to me there should be concern, but one can never know, right?!

The only issue that would be of concern is if there were any evidence of infection associated with the dental implants and/or any other areas of your mouth. Since oral infections can go many months without obvious symptoms, it would be a good idea to have a thorough dental check up with xrays and a cleaning before you become pregnant. This way you can be reassured that your dental health is ok! Also dental cleanings during pregnancy are definitely recommended to help keep down the build up of plaque which will reduce inflammation around the gumline.

update: spoke with my dentist at my regular dental cleaning, and I'm all good to go! I am going to be gestational surrogate for a family, so I wanted to check on the effects of fertility medications as well. I also did not disclose the implants to the family for fear of how they might view me as a person (I know what folks think of people who have false teeth, ha!), and my dentist says that there is no reason for anyone else to know except she (my dentist) and I. I'm very excited to move forward in my current venture. Thanks for the attention, Bryanna!
