Well, I've made the three month mark and have been coping not too badly overall with my new top plate. However, my gums shrunk so much and food was getting caught between the plate and my gum all the time, and I could just about pop them out with a jiggle, they moved when I laugh, etc.etc. Soooo, I go to the denturist (and asked for a "soft" liner) She said no, said I can only have a hard liner and not until 6 months. She then put this horrible pink goop on the plate, had me bite down on it, leave it for a bit and then said, this should do you for awhile. I admit the bite was fine, no more slippage...but boy oh boy, when I looked in the mirror in the truck !! I looked like a boxer ready to slip into the ring for a few rounds. GREAT BIG TEETH now ---barely can slide my gums over them. I phoned her today and I told her I hate that ---would rather have slippage. She said try to peel it off and if I can't (couldn't) to see her on Wednesday. So off I go tomorrow feeling really ticked off. She said there is no alternative but this until the 6 months ! I am wondering too what that goop was ---tasted terrible and turns into a rubber type texture. I don't want crap like that in my mouth. On the same vein, I somehow thought dentures were made of porcelain (as in breakable?) Mine are plastic. Is that "normal" ? I'm really wondering if I'm dealing with the right company/person. Three months is a loooooong time to go with slipping teeth (at least i'll look better than Rocky Balboa). LOL. Perhaps one of those non-zinc "glues" would do? thanks

Boy it sounds like your denturist is not very compassionate! Geez, I wonder how she would deal with this situation if it were her????

The goop she put in the denture is like a soft reline. It's a type of acrylic that is used to take up the large areas where the dentures are not fitting. It is hard to get a snug fit while the gums are still healing... and many people have similiar experiences to yours. Not that that makes it any easier.... because it sure doesn't!

You could try a zinc free adhesive and see if that helps with the slippage. The one that people seem to like alot is called Secure. It can only be bought online at secure.com. It's worth a try!

As for the material that the dentures are made from... the teeth are either porcelain or plastic... usually plastic unless you specified porcelain which is usually more expensive. Both materials wear similarly. The porcelain tends to look more "real tooth like" than the plastic ones. The denture itself is made from a variety of acrylics and plastics. Sometimes there is some metal used in the palate portion depending on the individual needs of the patient.

Hopefully the denturist will be of some actual help tomorrow!! Also, check out the Secure adhesive.... the denture patients in our office rave about it!

Hi Bryanna ----thank you for your reply. I did order some Secure on-line--I hope it comes soon !! Boy, once that goop came off, the denturist said that it will be even looser than when I came in as she had to use an abrasive to remove some of the palate. Well, gee she wasn't kidding !! I look much better (less than a boxer ready to enter the ring with his mouthguard on) but boy oh boy are they loose. She said I will just have to make do with liners, bonders etc. until my 6 months are up when she will do a hard reline (I did ask if I will have BIG teeth again and she said no). Sigh. This sure is not a fun thing is it? You'd think I'd lose some weight in this process...NOT !! Maybe in the meantime until my Secure comes in, I might try some SeaBond. I've read that a few people like that too.
