I had an exposed nerve in my last upper right molar, so I had the tooth surgically extracted. I also had a broken top front tooth that I was having impressions for a flipper made for. the dentist extracted my molar and took the impressions 5 minutes later. After all was said and done and the front tooth removed and the new flipper in place i began having intense pain in the top of my mouth. come to find out my teeth had shifted so much that the dentist had to take new impressions and order a brand new flipper that he paid for, even though he tried blaming the shifting of my teeth on not wearing the flipper as designated, even though i wore it to the tee of how they told me too.

Now even with the new flipper my teeth are continuing to shift and the new flipper already doesn't fit right. so my question is should the impressions have been taken while my mouth was so swollen and would a flipper made incorrectly have caused this shifting? Also the flipper was made wear the metal was sitting in between my teeth wear there is now a large gap and the new flipper grabs around the outside of my molar

Hi casey,

Ideally the impression for the flipper is taken PRIOR to the removal of any teeth. Sounds like he forgot to do the impression before he removed the molar.

It is important to wear the flipper as directed by the dentist. However, if you did that and your teeth still shifted, then the appliance may not be fitting properly. The first flipper he made was obviously ill fitting and the metal arm should not have been in between your teeth.... unless there was no place else to put it. The second flipper with the arm around the molar is usually the way it is done.

Frequently flippers need to be adjusted as the surgical sites heal. So maybe you just need an adjustment?? Have you gone back to him to do that yet?
