I have a repeated blister in the gum on the cheek side in one location. Returns about every third day.
No pain. No blood or pus. No bad taste. Just clear liquid. Went away with antibiotics for about two weeks, then it returned. Nearby teeth feel solid and normal. What might it be? |

Hi ozzie,
A recurring blister on the gum can be what is called a fistula. This is most often caused by an infection from a tooth. Antibiotics may help the blister to shrink, but it's only temporary because the infection is not the blister itself, it is a tooth. The blister is the outlet from the pressure of the infection, but as long as the tooth is present, the blister will continue to form. What eventually happens is the blister closes off and a large swelling occurs. An infected tooth often has no initial symptoms other than a blister on the gum. This does not mean that the infection is small or trivial. The blister actually forms when the infection has been present for a long time. As in the case of root canaled teeth... they remain infected even after the root canal, so it is typical to develop a fistula below/above a root canaled tooth. Perhaps it would be a good idea to see your dentist for an exam and xrays of that area. Sometimes blisters on the gum area are actually a type of a herpes virus. They can be recurring, then lay dormant, then occur again sometime later. Antibiotics do not get rid of this type of sore... not even temporarily. Please let us know what you find out. Bryanna Quote:
