Default Sinus Perf after simple extraction

Hi~
I had my wisdom tooth extracted, upper left, by a dentist -- simple extraction.
Question: Would I know if I had a sinus perf? It has been almost 4 weeks and I still get pressure on off and referred soreness, no pain. My sinus on that side of the extraction is a bit plugged but it was on/off before the extraction. I know Bryanna said that it sounds like I am healing fine, per my last thread, but after reading this board, I am worried about a sinus perf. How would I know? I called the dentist yesterday and she said no, that did not happen -- but I feel so scared with this damn extraction site taking so long to heal. It still looks pink and there is a "hole". I also have anxiety issues so I think this is contributing to my panic. Thank God I dont have any more wisdom teeth and I pray I never have to get a tooth pulled again. I find this whole ordeal very traumatic.
Bryanna, your thoughts on poss perf? I do not have a nosebleed....never did and no fever. I just have this on/off sensitivity or "feeling" at the extraction site. Any advice would be appreciated!!! Thanks~

Default Hi Kris

I hope bryanna can get back to you. I also had teeth removed, two upper molars three weeks ago. I still have a hole also, but at this point, there is no pain or swelling. If this continues to bother you, do go in for a visit, just to make sure there is nothing wrong. It may help your anxiety to hear from the dentist himself. I also agree, having the teeth pulled is traumatic to go through. I hated the whole ordeal, and I was sad over it too. I never did like the dentist, and age has not helped. Hope you will be doing better soon. ginnie

Thanks Ginny~ Yes, it was so traumatic to me and I am still feeling anxious about it when I think about it even though it was over in a minute, seriously. I feel like I just dont trust any dentist and now I regret getting it out even though it was sore and crooked and needed to come out.
Bryanna.....your thoughts? Thanks~

Hi Kris,

It is normal to have discomfort/sensitivity/achiness at and around the site of the extraction for several weeks. It is also normal for the surgical hole to take several weeks to heal closed.

The sinus issue could a temporary thing caused byinflammation associated with the extraction which again, normal. Since you had the sinus issue before, then you may have a chronic sinus problem/inflammation on that side unrelated to the extraction. Does the pressure in the sinus decrease if you blow your nose or take a decongestant?

When you have a sinus perforation that is problematic, you would generally feel a "communication" between your sinus and your mouth. Meaning, there would be a distinct sensation that air or fluid was moving between your sinus and your mouth. Do you have that sensation?

If I recall correctly, you stated earlier that your wisdom tooth was sideways or crooked and came out very easily. The chance of a sinus perf with a crooked wisdom tooth that was an uncomplicated extraction is very slim because the angle of the roots of wisdom teeth in that position are usually not located near the sinus wall, in fact, this type of tooth is often sitting in more tissue than bone.

I know it seems like you should be completely healed by now but from all that you have stated... your healing sounds very normal to me. It has been my experience that many people who have this type of extraction didn't even realize that the hole was open for several weeks...

Please try not to agonize over this.... continue to do your rinsing and careful cleaning. If you develop a fever, swelling, radiating "pain"... then be concerned and call your dentist. Otherwise, at the end of 3 months of healing, see your dentist for a post op xray to monitor the healing.

OK, how does that sound to you ????? ~;-)

Bryanna

Thanks Bryanna! You really do help me feel better. I just never had many dental procedures so this was very traumatic for me. Yes, this was a simple extraction and I dont have any of the perf symptoms that you suggest. I do have some "soreness" though in teeth in front of the extraction site...this comes and goes and is more of an annoyance than pain. Today, everything seems better.....still a couple of episodes of "pressure" and annoyance but less often than yesterday. I think I need to learn patience!! Thanks for your help and feedback. You really are a wonderful resource and I thank you for your advice.....I truly do! Kris

Kris,

You're very welcome ;-)

Your feelings are very understandable but from everything you have written, I don't see any reason to be concerned.

Enjoy the rest of the weekend!!

Bryanna

Bryanna,
Once final concern: When I eat -- something as simple as a banana and it gets over to the extraction site, it bothers me. It is better after the salt water rinse but can this be a sign of infection or is this simply just raw skin that needs to "toughen" up in that hole OR until that hole closes up? I am so scared of an infection that this is consuming me! It has been 4 weeks today and IS getting much better....not sore all the time -- maybe once/twice a day.
Thanks~

Kris

Default Hi Chris

I think Bryanna answered your concerns really well. I hope you are less anxious. I still have a hole where the tooth was also after three weeks. I rinse after eating, so no food gets into that spot. I used a mouth mirror, and discovered the hole wasn't deep and appears to be closing the way it should. I hope it goes just fine for you, and that you continue to heal. I sure do understand your dislike of the whole thing. Me too. Just continue to do what you are doing and keep in touch with bryanna if you should develope another concern. Be good to yourself. ginnie

Ginnie, I think you are right....I wish I wasnt so anxious. I have some anxiety issues, obviously. I just get so nervous about this tooth. It is filling in nicely...but still pretty dark pink. I guess that is to be expected. I need to trust the dentist. I need to trust there is no infection and my body is just taking time to heal and adjust. THanks~

Default Hi kris

I get anxious too, you are not alone in that. That is why I come back to this site often. I get encouragement, and affirmation that things are really OK. You are healing just fine from the sound of it. All will be well. take care of yourself, and lets hope the both of us don't have to go through any more dental stuff for awhile. ginnie
