So I had two teeth removed yesterday (Thursday) morning at 10am. 31 was a fractured root canal and 30 needed one and I just could not afford it and it had a amalgam filling in it for over 30 years and there was no guarantee that they could keep the tooth anyway. At about 4pm yesterday I went back to OS because I thought it was not stopping bleeding but it did, it was actually oozing. He said you could put gauze in, but I left it alone I do not want to disturb the clots he said that they looked great. So today it was oozing that disgusting blood taste but nothing heavy. You could see it oozing but it is not oozing over the site. I taste it and it is a light pink not a deep red. My question is is it still normal to still be oozing still? I rinsed twice with salt water today already ( I did rinse 24 hours later). During the day I was not that active and it was not oozing that much but now being that I have both kids and moving around a lot it seems to ooze. Is this normal Bryanna for it to still do this?
I am scared that this will never stop oozing or bleeding
The clots that are there are starting to turn gray but the one site is oozing blood? It is not poring out but why all of a sudden it is doing this?
I don't want to get nervous. This is the most it has oozed all day. Please any advice Bryanna will help

Yes, it is very normal for the surgical wounds to ooze a bit of blood for the first day or two after the extractions. The reason it may ooze more when you are active is because as your blood pressure goes up from activity, the blood pumps more into that area. I would not worry about that. It should let up by tomorrow.

Make sure you are only doing "gentle", light swishing salt water rinses so you don't disturb the clot. It's only necessary to use a pinch of salt in a 3 oz cup of water.

Also.... I'm glad you had that root canaled tooth removed and also opted to not root canal that other molar. You did yourself a HUGE favor in the long run.

Hi. Thanks for your quick response. So I called the OS service cause it was a little heavier and the OS who answered is also an MD so I explained what is going on. He was very nice. Explained to me that it is normal also and if i want I can put a cool damp guaze over the site and bite for 30 minutes. I dont want to do that because I do not want to pull the clot out. He told me not to rinse because it might have aggravated it. But I forgot to tell you and him that I have a slight cough. I noticed after I cough it bleeds more. i asked him if I will bleed to death and he laughed and said no. I also asked him will this eventually stop and he said yes, it will.
But again, i forgot to mention the cough.. What do I do? Will it eventually stop bleeding even with the cough? It is not a bad cough just at times I cough as gently as I can but there is sometimes mucus that needs to be cleared out. ugggg. They never mentioned coughing or sneezing, that I should not do it it is not on their pamphlet.
So here is the question.. Even with the cough will it eventually stop bleeding?
There is a nice black jelly like clot there and today earlier it was a grayish i am not sure what happened to the grey.
I am petrified of the dry socket. If i wake up tomorrow with no pain does that mean I might not have that to worry about being that it will be day 3?
Ok so I am a mess and i know it lol but I am just scared. My husband is funny he had a root canal (again) get infected and he had to have it out. He said he bled for 3 days and just swallowed the blood. He never got a dry socket or infection or anything. Why can't i just shake it off like it is normal to bleed and move on with my life?

It is normal for there to be some oozing of blood. You may even see some on your pillow in the morning.... normal. It is good that it is slightly bleeding as this means that the clot has not been disturbed. Yes, coughing will make it ooze a little, but it shouldn't be a real concern and the majority of the bleeding will most likely stop by tomorrow. If the oozing is troublesome to you, lightly wet a tea bag and lay it on the surgical site, bite down gently on the tea bag for about 15 minutes. The tannin in the tea will stop the bleeding.

Try not to worry about the color of the clot.... all that you have described is normal. I wouldn't recommend that you swallow the blood if you can help it because the blood can make you nauseous. Men do the weirdest things sometimes...... ~;->

Get some rest... you can prop your head up on a couple of pillows tonight if you would be more comfortable. Check in with us tomorrow.

Hi Bryanna,
So yesterday ( Saturday) I popped in at the OS just cause I am a paranoid mess to make sure all was ok and he said I have lots of clots and it looks real good. It is day 3 today and besides the feeling of my face being so tight and itchy it looks disgusting but I do not see any hole empty. They have gray and white and gross stuff over them. OS told me don't look at them they will drive you crazy lol.
So my question is is it still normal only 3 days later and 2 extractions next to each other for it to still be sore? And really tight? When I move around it throbs a little but when I sit still it is ok a little throb but nothing so painful. I do get a little pain in my ear but I think it is from jaw trauma. I am not thinking these are early warning signs of a dry socket happening is it?
It hurts a little when I swallow but I guess that is normal also.
And no bleeding so far for 2 days (but today is not ver yet).
So is this all normal?

VERY normal.... I would expect the site to feel this way for several days. Afterall, you had surgery there!! If you had surgery any place else on your body, you would be sore and it would feel tight and probably it would look gross too...... right?

A dry socket is not soreness or tightness.... it is PAINFFUL... throbbing relentless PAIN whether you are standing, sitting, laying down, vacuuming, etc. Do you think you have that?

Your description of the wound, although gross, is NORMAL and exactly what it should look like.

No I do not have that.. It is just tightness and at times very tight but not painful like that. Yes I had 2c sections and it was sore. Just concerned regarding dry socket and possible an infection. How many days do you go until you are possible out of dry socket and infections way?

Tightness is very normal, so don't be concerned about that. A dry socket typically shows itself with increasing painful symptoms on the 3rd-5th day post op. The first week post op is the most crucial time after an extraction as the clots are forming to help keep the bone moist so proper healing can take place. It is when the clots are disturbed or when they don't form at the onset that a dry socket occurs. In your case, the clotting is normal as your surgeon told you so it's best to just continue with what you have been doing and nothing less or more.

Remember to gently rinse with warm salt water only, no mouthwash. This will keep the site clean and promote healing.

Day 5 and no excruciating pain in either socket.. Yes !!!
But it is still sore, tight, and at times throbs a little. I woke up this morning tasting blood and when I spit out it was a little brown in my saliva but when I felt congested I pushed out the mucus from my nose and there was a little blood there so I am thinking maybe a little from the sites and sinuses. I know they are bottom teeth so the sinus is not related but it could be from the dryness in the house.
Is it normal to still have that AWFUL blood taste 5 days later? The sites look ok. They have some dark gray but no white on them. The tooth next to 30 is sore I guess that is normal though it was a RC tooth done a while ago. No more RC'S for me, I am done with them. I will hope the ones i have left will last, if not partials will be my alternative.
I see OS on Thursday to have the stitch taken out. Where 31 was in the back gum there is an incision and it is open (like a cut on your finger). It is the really soft part of your gum that goes up. Will this eventually close itself or will it remain like that?
Ugg I hate extractions they are so traumatic for me at least. I am hoping that this is all normal and there is no infection though if there was I think I would be in real pain, not discomfort. Is that right. Like I said it was only 5 days ago and it was a double extraction right next to one another. It is still sore it has not gotten worse, a little better. My gums feel a little big but again I think it just might all be related to tightness. I hope I am not driving you crazy. I am emotional today (no it is not that lol). Just want this ordeal to heal and I want to move on.I am sure this is not anything to be concerned about it is just that since August I have been dealing with mouth discomfort and been through so much that i want a break and I hope in the coming days things will die down.

Hi Nicole,

Yes, it is normal to still be tasting blood and have an awful taste or smell coming from your mouth. Why? Because you have 2 open surgical wounds...all normal part of healing. Are you rinsing with warm salt water?

The blood from your nose may be due to swallowing some blood and it pushed up into your sinus when you blew your nose. Not to worry about this.

The adjacent tooth #29 may be sore for awhile because it shares the same bundle of nerves and ligaments that have been traumatized during the extraction of the other teeth. These things take time to calm down. The only added concern is that since this tooth is root canaled, the bacteria surrounding the root may have been stirred up which could also cause it to be sore and achy. It would be wise to have this tooth monitored periodically with an xray.

The incision will heal closed. This was done to gain access to that tooth in an attempt to cause the least amount of trauma to the jawbone.

It sounds like you're healing ok. Let us know what the surgeon says on thursday.
