Default Narcotics & teeth problems

Hi, everybody:

I read in various forums that narcotic painkillers can cause teeth problems, such as teeth decay and loss. Does this just apply to fentanyl lollypops (Actiq) because they are sweet, candy-like medical lollypops, or does this apply to ALL narcotic painkillers, in patch, tablet, or capsule form? If it applies to all narcotic painkillers, what is(are) the reason(s) for this and what do they exactly do to teeth?

Thanks for your information.

Hi Kitty,

It applies to any medication oral or other wise that dries up the bodies secretions or decreases the output of saliva. Orally, anytime you suck on any lollipop or any sugar coated candy, mints..... you risk developing tooth decay because the sugar in these products erodes the enamel. The more you eat them, the higher the risk. Unless you are thoroughly brushing your teeth after every time you have one of these things.....you will get tooth decay.

In addition to sugar, another cause of tooth decay is having a dry mouth. We need a lot of saliva constantly bathing our teeth to remove some of the debris from our food. Any medication that dries up our oral secretions will promote tooth decay and gum disease. Here is a partial list of them:
