I am about to have the second to last back molar removed from my upper teeth. Do I have to get a replacement false tooth? Are all the teeth surrounding the lost tooth going to move into the vacant space and create large spaces between my teeth trapping more food?

The second to last molar can be either your first or second molar...depending on if you have your wisdom tooth or not. The replacement of this tooth depends on how your bite comes together and if you are missing any other teeth. This is something your dentist can check very easily and explain your replacement options.

I have had four teeth removed when I was young to have braces fitted. I still have my wisdom teeth. I wanted to know if I just left the space empty would the teeth around it move much. To get a false tooth is really costly.

If you have your wisdom teeth, then this tooth is a second molar. It is possible that the wisdom tooth will shift slightly into the empty space and/or the first molar may move back slightly into the empty space. It is also possible that the lower tooth that bites against this tooth may move upwards if it is not biting against another tooth.

Your dentist would be able to evaluate your bite to give you a better understanding of what could occur if you did not replace this tooth. Sometimes it is worth spending the money on the initial problem rather than spend more money on the problems that develop down the road.
