Default Molar Hell

Hi there

I had a filling replaced in January 2012 by an NHS dentist.

The tooth didnt settle down after the procedure and I endured a niggly burning pain which waxed and waned until April 2012 in the gum surrounding the Molar (bottom set of teeth on my right hand side - second from back - have no wisdom teeth) had become painful and had started to swell - I was also getting an inflamed-like pain from in between the affected tooth and the pre-molar next to it. I went back to the NHS dentist who told me nothing wrong.

I carried on with mild pain which continued to wax and wane until June 2012 when I decided I would go private.

The X-Rays showed no decay as such in the tooth and surrounding teeth and I decided to replace the filling to see whether that would help.

It didnt help so I was offered Root Canal treatment in July 2012. The nerve was removed as it was very inflamed and was told by the dentist that it would definitely eradicate my pain 4 days after the first part of the treatment.
It didnt relieve the pain and it continued in the same areas as mentioned above.

I wanted to have the tooth extracted but dentist said to continue with root canal.

I had second appt which dentist filed and cleaned roots and for around a week after the area seems to settle. A week after that though the pain came back and had become slightly worse.

I had the root canal finished in Sept 2012 and immediately after the anaesthetic wore off the pain was there and had got moderately worse.

I had a course of Metronizadole but this didnt help either.

I decided to have the tooth extracted and did so 2 weeks ago.

It was a difficult extraction and was told though that the tooth didnt have any cracks anywhere so effectively had had a healthy tooth removed.

Anyway, pain free a couple of days after extraction but then 4 days later had excruciating pain - extraction site throbbing, swelling of gums around site, pre-molar throbbing and feeling as if it was becoming loose and very sore when I tapped on the tooth.

Been taking 400mg ibuprofen 3 times a day and paracetemol 4 x a day which alleviated the pain.

Decided to change my dentist again and she advised I had an infection in the socket.

So put me on a course of Klaricid (Clarithromycin) for 7 days 500mg per day.

Extraction site seems 50% better but the area where my extracted molar meets the pre-molar before it is still very sore and gums near the pre-molar are waxing and waneing with swelling and pain. The pre-molar throbs all the time and I am still in alot of pain and still painful whe I tap it. So taking more Ibuprofen and Paracetemol. Plus now given a 1000mg dose of Klaricid (Clarithromycin) for 7 days as previous dose was given incorrectly.

I am just so worried the site will not heal and just want to be out of pain.

What could the problem be? The site seems to still be very red and has a jelly like whiteish yellow substance in it?? The top set of teeth ache terribly also and I have pain in my ear, eye and neck!!

I worried its something more sinister although I am sure the dentist would recgonise this already. Could it be neuralgia? Previous dentist said she thought I had atypical facial pain but I was positive it was the tooth.

new dentist has said its just a waiting game for it to heal but as I have been pain nearly all year I am just so desperate for help. Should I ask for a referral to the hospital or am I being too hasty?

Please someone get me out of pain!!!

Regards

Louise

Hi Louise,

Any chance you could post xrays of that area? Has the dentist taken additional xrays since you had the tooth extracted? If not, he should to see if there are any remnants of the extracted tooth.

If you could post them, it may be helpful.

Bryanna

Hi Bryanna

I am unable to get x-rays as don't think dentist would provide me with them - I live in UK and am getting NHS treatment.

I am going to go back to the new dentist today as the area by the pre-molar started to bleed this morning and is causing swelling and pain again!

Not sure if I have had the right tooth out but been told surrounding teeth fine.

I am guessing though now that the previous dentist who took the tooth out may have damaged the pre-molar in some way as it was very difficult to remove and she was putting alot of pressure on that side of my teeth.

The very back tooth also now has lots of swelling and pain in the gum area and is very very red.

I am so fed up with this pain.....and getting very depressed with it too.

I will let you know how I get on today - I think I need a referral to the hospital really.

Thanks for responding though and will get back to you soon

Regards

Louise

Talking

Hi Bryanna

Just been to see my new dentist and had an x-ray which shows no problems with adjacent teeth either side of tooth extraction site.

She did comment on the fact that the extraction looked as if it had been a difficult one and I confirmed it was.

She then did a Corsodyl treatment around the extraction site and said the swelling is due to soft tissues pushing up making it feel as if the pre-molar is being forced out of its own socket.

Also advised to rinse with Corsodyl so am going to try that to see if it helps.

She said site is healing nicely now and it can now only get better so am alot more reassured than before.

Thanks for your replies and sorry for a rather pointless post.....although when you are desperate to rid the pain its good to talk!!

Any further info you may feel is relevant would be appreciated though.

Kind regards
