Default wisdom tooth removal

Hello,

My husband age 65 had his wisdom tooth removed from lower left jaw the Nov 26, 2012. Had pain level on a scale 1-10 pain was between 5-8. Took Norco at night and ibuprofen during the day, swelling, continued pain, twinges in jaw, took antibiotics, steroids, used clove oil, finally had the hole packed 2 1/2 wks after removal because became dry socket.
Christmas had swelling and pain, continued taking ibuprofen and Norco at night.
No more swelling. Began using a water pick and brushing dry socket to stimulate circulation. Tooth root stem was discovered and removed. Still has dull pain and twinges in jaw. As of Jan 15, 2013 stopped taking Norco. Stopped taking ibuprofen for a week and a half. Pain level and jaw was 1-3 on a scale of 1-10. And jaw twinges continues. But pain continues, so started taking ibuprofen Jan 16 again. Is having pain this long normal?
