Default Question regarding old filling and dental crown

Hello Everyone,

Last year I decided I wanted all mercury fillings removed from my mouth. After asking my dentist I was told I only had one. The issue was that I also have a gold crown covering a root canal, and the Xrays cannot penetrate the gold to see if there is mercury under it. The tooth had been filled by a different dentist. When I asked this dentist whether or not it was filled with amalgam, the receptionist viewed my file and stated that it was filled with a composite material.

Now here's my question. If the tooth was ORIGINALLY filled with amalgam prior to the root canal, is it possible that some of that amalgam is left after the root canal procedure and after the new filling was placed? Or are old fillings removed during these procedures? Thank you!
