Hello,

Recently I decided to remove all mercury fillings from my mouth. After consulting my primary care dentist, I was told that I only had one filling, but that he was unsure whether the tooth with a gold crown was filled with amalgam, since it was filled by another dentist. I contacted the other dentist and was told it was filled with a composite and there was no amalgam involved.

Here's my question. The tooth prior to the root canal and eventual crowning was filled with an mercury amalgam. What are the chances there is any mercury left over after the crowing? Does the crowing and root canal process involve taking out prior fillings due to the use of filing or other methods? I REALLY do not want to remove this crown, it costed me a small fortune and would hate to do it in vain.

Hi Royal Flush,

Dentists are suppose to remove all remnants of the old filling during the preparation for the crown. However, some dentists say they remove all of it when they really don't. You are right in that you cannot see through a metal crown to see what is underneath it.

What you may not be aware of is that the metal crown has been contaminated by the mercury that was in your other tooth. Mercury is never isolated to just one area. It contaminates everything in it's path and then some. So if your focus was to rid yourself of any obvious mercury contamination, then it would behoove you to have that crown removed and replaced with an all porcelain or zirconium crown.

Secondly, if you have not read up on root canaled teeth in correlation with chronic infection and systemic health, you may want to before you invest more money into that tooth. Here is one place to read about it...
