Default Infection in root canal tooth

Hi
I just got an infection in a tooth on which i had done root canal 7 years back. Now doctor says that it has to be extracted as the cap cannot be removed after root canal. Tooth comes out with the cap. Is it true? Is there no other option available?
Please help.
