Default Had top teeth extracted in January, it's now June, getting a denture

And I wanted to see if you think that's enough time? Five months? I am 44 and been without an immediate denture, as insurance wouldn't cover one, I get ONE set for my lifetime with them, and so for the top one I need now, I am thinking of paying out of pocket for it. Will it be a waste of money or is it okay if I do it now? I have an appt on Tuesday and am going to a place that has a on site lab, but they need 3 days to fabricate my denture as I am not going with the economy one. I want to get a GOOD one, if I get one now do you think it's going to work out Bryanna? Thanks for your feedback, or anyone's feedback, I am excited about getting my smile back, and can't WAIT! I am sick of not eating well and 'just getting by' with whatever I can gum.

Hi Pam,

Nice to hear from you
Wow... five months already!!

Generally the bone continues to heal and change for the first year after extractions. However, the biggest changes occur in the first few months post op. I know you were concerned about finances at the time of the extractions but as I had mentioned to you previously, an immediate denture actually works as a template to help form the bony ridge and prevent some bone loss during the early stages of the healing process. The immediate denture is what makes the fit of the permanent denture the best that it can be. So placing a denture now will not have that same affect. Irrelevant of whether it is an "economy one or a more expensive one" because that crucial part of the healing stage has already passed.

It may behoove you to find out the difference between the economy denture and the other denture. Sometimes it's just a question of having porcelain teeth as opposed to acrylic teeth put on the denture. Which means both dentures would fit the same.

I don't want to sound pessimistic.... I feel it's important for you to have teeth and have your smile back! But you need to understand that fitting you for a denture either now or later may be difficult and it may have nothing to do with choosing between the economy or expensive denture. It may have to do with the way your bone has healed.

It's best to see your dentist and get his/her opinion on having a denture made. Sometimes denture clinics... don't individualize the esthetics of the denture to the patient or are too concerned about the actual fit. I'm sorry to say that... but it's true. Perhaps your denture place is different?? I hope so.

Let us know what you decide and how things are going. I really hope things work out okay for you!

Thanks Bryanna, I'll make sure to see what the differences are between the 'grades' of their offerings. To be honest I haven't had a dentist in a long time, the oral surgeon I have for my extractions told me to go to this clinic so that's where I am going. I'll be sure to keep you updated in this thread, thanks for the information Bryanna! I am going in with the attitude that it's going to be okay and I'm going to get a good one, so hopefully that will help see me through the rest of this long process.

Hi Pam,

Yes, please ask questions about the differences in the dentures and it would be best if they showed you samples of the different dentures as they were discussing them with you.

A positive outlook is always the best way to approach most things! You have been very tolerant these last few months and hopefully you will have a fabulous fitting denture very soon!!

All the best to you and yes, keep us posted )

Wow! I h ad my fitting yesterday, I went with the higher end ones because of getting an extra 30 days of free adjustments, AND being able to choose the tooth color. I went with B1 that looks like my bottom teeth, so it's going to be great I think. I had a wax try in denture thing and had AWESOME suction on that, due mostly to my higher palette. I loved the teeth too, very pretty. There was some things I don't like but I am sure they'll take care of me. I was VERY pleased with them and the company. I go back Thursday to get my denture and I am so excited! I can't wait to work on learning how to eat and talk with it in. Basically the things that sold me on it were the realism of the gum tissue, and like I mentioned, being able to select a color to match my bottom teeth as well as the extra month of adjustments. I am very pleased. I'll share a photo of it with me smiling wearing it tomorrow after I get home and take a few from my web cam.

Thanks Bryanna for your support and encouragement through these long months, I find it hard to believe that it's almost been a year since I was due to have them out up top and had to reschedule it for the first time.

Pam,

YAY!!!! I am so happy for you

A high palate just may be your best friend!!! If the suction of the denture is good... then that is half the battle of getting a good fit )

You will have a trial and error period. Approach is slowly and cautiously. Do not try to eat anything chewy and continue to cut up your food into small pieces. If you take this approach, you will fair very well

Please do take a pic of your new smile and post it~!

Bryanna

I enjoyed reading your posts and Byanna's responses. I have FULL dentures and offer ONE suggestion. Don't try to put too much in your mouth at one time. You look GREAT. Be careful of sore spots and get them checked out immediately for any needed adjustment. Happy eats to you. Yes, lack of teeth creates poor eating choices. You will be thrilled to get back to eating like a "normal" person.
