Arrow duplicate:new in this forum and seeking advice about a root canal tooth

Hi Bryanna,
I broke my upper left premolar june of this year and went to the dentist and was suggested that i either do a root canal or tooth extraction. I had not read about root canals or their complications and ended up asking for one. The root canal treatment was begun on the first visit. After i started reading about root canals and their systemic long term consequences, i changed my mind about getting the root canal treatment completed. I wanted to get it extracted. The dentist suggested that i remove the pre-molar on the right side as well, and get orthodontic treatment to fix my crooked teeth. She also suggested that i extract the bottom 2 wisdom teeth as well that were impacted, which she said might cause problems in the future.

I was referred to an dental surgeon. I ended up not going to the dental surgeon because i was not comfortable about the idea of having 4 teeth removed, 3 of which could last possibly a life time without problems. So carelessly, since the tooth was not bothering me after that treatment, i ended up not going to the dentist at all. At first i did search for a biological dentist to get the root canal tooth removed, as is adviced in dr. mercolas' article. But there is none available in the part of the world i live.

But now, 5 months after that root canal treatment was begun, that tooth has started bothering me. It began to ache when i ate from that side but then i did oil pulling with coconut oil and the pain went away, except for a dull ache at the top of the teeth, in the gum area. I finally went to see a dentist today. I said i wanted to get that tooth extracted, and she suggested the same thing. Remove the tooth on the right side as well and get braces. She said she wouldn't advice that i get an implant, and she didn't explain why.

What would you advice. My root canal treatment was only begun. The whole pulp was not cleaned out, only the top portion. Do i still need to go to an oral surgeon and ask for a complete removal of the periodontal ligament. Should i remove both upper premolars and get braces, as well as the impacted bottom ones. Or is it better that i just have the one tooth that has the root canal removed and get an implant.

May God bless you.

Default need advice on root canal treatment tooth and extraction

June of this year i broke my upper left premolar. Didn't even realize that i broke my tooth until i actually bit on the broken piece while eating. I thought it was something that was in the food!! I went to the dentist. She suggested i either get the tooth extracted or get root canal treatment. I naively asked for the root canal but since then i've done some reading and decided that i didn't want a root canal, not when there's all the systemic consequences that come with it. So i went back to the dentist, asked for an extraction. She suggested that i remove 2 upper promolars and 2 bottom wisdom tooth (since the wisdom teeth were impacted and she says i might have problems later on in life with those two) and then get braces. I guess i got overwhelmed with the choice i had to make, i didn't really want to have 3 really healthy teeth extracted just because sometime in the future it may or may not cause be problems. I ended up not going back to visit the dentist, partly also because the broken tooth was no longer bothering me. I did search for a holistic dentist who might be able to help me extract the way it should be, with removal of the periodontal ligament and any necrotic tissues and bones. But there aren't any holistic dentists in this part of the world.

I've started to have pain in the tooth now. It began a month back, and i was going to visit a dentist but then i did some home remedy and the pain went away, so i ended up not going. The pain came back again yesterday. It hurt when i eat on that side and i also noticed that the area right above that tooth in the gum hurt also. I oil-pulled with coconut oil and now there is no pain when i eat from that side, but there's still a dull ache in the gum area right above the tooth. So i went to see a different dentist today. Asked for a tooth extraction. She said she wouldn't advice me to do a dental implant, and she didn't really explain why i shouldn't go for an implant, said something about my other teeth being misaligned. She however thinks i should remove the broken tooth and the corresponding tooth on the other side and get orthodontic treatment. She's a general dentist so she referred me to an orthodontist. I haven't yet gone to see the orthodontist.

It'd be great if you could help me decide what my best possible choice is here. Implant? Orthodontic treatment or partial dentures. The reason why i don't prefer the orthodontic treatment is since i'd have to remove a healthy tooth. I'm okay with an implant, but the dentist who saw me advices against it.

Hi dash,

First thing to do is get that broken tooth removed. It sounds an infection is spreading from the tooth into the bone. So that should be done first and foremost.

As far as removing the other premolar...... that may have been suggested if you have over crowding of your teeth and/or a misaligned bite. Not every dentist would agree to extract that tooth. So before you did that, it would be wise to get a couple of opinions about that tooth.

Regarding your wisdom teeth..... impacted wisdom teeth may or may not cause problems in the future. It all depends on where they are located in the bone, how close they are to the second molars and if there is any radio-graphic pathology indicating a cyst or infection. If the wisdom teeth are causing bone loss behind the second molars or there is a cyst and/or infection, then they should be removed. Without x-rays no one here can tell you any more than that.

Regarding the implant to replace the upper left pre molar.... in order to place an implant the bone has to be healthy and there has to be adequate bone height, width and thickness. Your bone may be compromised in that area due to over crowding or crooked teeth.

First get that tooth out. Second consult with an orthodontist as to whether or not there is enough room to place a dental implant or if there is a way to create enough room for an implant. Tell him you prefer not to have to remove the other pre molar. It would be best to have 2 to 3 ortho opinions since they will all differ.

Hope this information is helpful.

Hi Dash,

I answered most of these questions in a reply to your other post.
So please refer to that post.

Just a side mention...
It is irrelevant if the root canal was completed or not. The bacteria inside of this tooth is spreading and yes it is important to see an oral surgeon to have this tooth removed as well as the periodontal ligament. The ligament should ALWAYS be removed no matter what condition the tooth is in.

The IAOMT organization which is made up of dentists and other healthcare practitioners who think more holistically than conventional practitioners. It has members all over the world. Did you go to their website, IAOMT.org to look for a biological dentist?
