Default bone graft

Hi, first post, so i'll make this short. I recently had bone graft and was supposed to get some implant work at same time, but my surgeon found bone to be so poor he only did the graft for now. He also used a portion of my own bone mixed with the material to help with its success. Got my fingers crossed.
My question is what are things, if any i can do or take to promote good bone growth or taking of the graft? Are there vitamins, diet changes, supplements etc that might help. I'm 53 yrs old BTW...I once had a fusion in c5-7area of neck that didnt take with all cadaver bone. It was redone several yrs later with bone from my hip. Although i believe the first failure was caused by my continued use of tobacco smoking. Thats an issue now also. I no longer smoke tobacco, but have been using an e-cig since first of yr. These supposedly only contain nicotine in their vapor which you then wean from.
So, long enuf for now. If any history or details are needed please respond. I just really need success, almost dont feel i can live with the mistake i made in getting to this point, which i let an immidiacare dentist talk me into. Wish id been better informed.
Thanks, Tee

Hi tee,

I am in the dental field and can offer you some information here. To make it easier to follow, I will re post from your post and answer you in bold type.

<<I recently had bone graft and was supposed to get some implant work at same time, but my surgeon found bone to be so poor he only did the graft for now. He also used a portion of my own bone mixed with the material to help with its success. Got my fingers crossed.>>

WAS A TOOTH EXTRACTED AT THE TIME OF THE BONE GRAFT? IF SO HAD THAT TOOTH BEEN PREVIOUSLY ROOT CANALED? WAS THE TOOTH PERIO-DONTALLY INVOLVED?
IF THE TOOTH HAD BEEN REMOVED EARLIER, HAD IT BEEN ROOT CANALED, WAS THERE PERIO DISEASE AND HOW LONG AGO WAS IT REMOVED?

WHEN YOU SAY THE BONE WAS POOR.... DO YOU MEAN IT WAS DISEASED? AND/OR WAS THERE A GREAT DEAL OF BONE LOSS/RECESSION?

<< My question is what are things, if any i can do or take to promote good bone growth or taking of the graft?>>

THIS DEPENDS ON A FEW THINGS....
1) THE ANSWERS TO THE ABOVE QUESTIONS.
2) DO YOU HAVE PERIODONTAL DISEASE?
3) DO YOU HAVE OTHER HEALTH PROBLEMS?
4) ARE YOU TAKING MEDICATIONS, SYNTHETIC HORMONES AND/OR ANY BONE BUILDING DRUGS?

<< Are there vitamins, diet changes, supplements etc that might help. I'm 53 yrs old BTW...I once had a fusion in c5-7area of neck that didnt take with all cadaver bone. DIET HAS A HUGE IMPACT ON THE WAY WE HEAL.
A DIET CONSISTING OF HOME COOKED WHOLESOME FRESH FOOD, NO REFINED SUGAR OR FAKE SUGAR SUBSTITUTES, NO PROCESSED FOODS, NO SODA (EVEN DIET), CONSUME PLENTY OF FILTERED WATER.... ALL OF WHICH DO MORE FOR THE BODY THAN ANY AMOUNT OF VITAMIN/MINERAL SUPPLEMENTS.
VITAMINS WORK BEST ALONG WITH A NUTRITIOUS DIET AS THEY WORK SYNERGISTIC-ALLY WITH WHOLE FOOD. THEY ARE NOT DESIGNED TO WORK IN PLACE OF WHOLE FOODS. THE POSITIVE AFFECTS OF TAKING VITAMINS WHILE EATING A POOR DIET WILL BE MINIMAL AND SHORT LIVED AND NOT NEARLY AS AFFECTIVE AS CONSUMING A WHOLESOME DIET.

LIFESTYLE ALSO HAS A HUGE IMPACT ON HOW WE HEAL.
E-CIGARETTES ARE TOXIC JUST LIKE REAL CIGARETTES. NICOTINE IN ANY FORM IS HIGHLY TOXIC. IT WILL COMPROMISE THE IMMUNE SYSTEM AND IT WILL SLOW DOWN <IF NOT INTERRUPT> THE HEALING PROCESS.
MANY MEDICATIONS ALSO COMPROMISE THE IMMUNE SYSTEM AND CAN CONTRIBUTE TO POOR HEALING.

I understand that you are concerned and that you have had an unpleasant experience in the past. To try and make this a positive experience, you may need to make some permanent changes in your diet and lifestyle. If you do not want to do that or you feel you won't do that... then all you can do is take your chances and see what develops. I can suggest supplements to you but without the other changes, you will probably be throwing your money away as the results would be minimal if any.
