Default Tooth #14 extraction with or without sedation?

Hi,

Thanks to all the information from Bryanna on this forum, I am opting to have tooth #14 extracted instead of retreated with another root canal. It had a root canal procedure done 13 years ago, and my jawbone is now infected. I'm scheduled to have it extracted in 3 weeks, and I can't decide whether to do it with or without sedation. In addition to the extraction, the oral surgeon will debride the infected area and do a bone graft. Would I be a fool to have these things done with only local anesthesia?

Also, how risky would it be to have an implant done as a replacement option? I understand that implants need adequate and healthy bone, but is it still likely to succeed if it heals well? I'd hate to have to grind down 2 healthy teeth to have a bridge put on.

Thanks in advance.

sadly I just had tooth #13 extracted yesterday, last option, but it needed to be done. What is your reasoning for sedation?

I had local anesthetic (a lot of it!), and I was okay.. the most uncomfortable feeling was the pulling and pushing he did to loosen the tooth… and only because I have PTSD from the one dentist who pushed so hard on this tooth many years back removing a cap which is what I believe to have been the point where the tooth fractured. Yesterday he pushed pretty hard felt like my other teeth were going to come out with it, but not so. He assured me all was fine, and in a matter of seconds, the tooth was removed. Sad I know, but needed.

I also had bone particles put in, with the local, didn't feel a thing, I promise. My bone loss was bad, in fact, the infection also blew a hole through my nasal cavity. I will grow new bone in 3 mo when he will put the implant in and then wait another 3mo I believe, when I get the cap.

Sounds like I had the same procedure yesterday that you are having in three weeks. I think you'll be fine with local… assuming he gives you enough. My doc must have given me three shots, and the shots were not bad because he put that anesthetic swab on their first.

Good luck.. I waited far too long to do this… my infection was huge, and already the huge bump in my mouth is pretty much gone. I have a flipper tooth to fill in the gap until the implant is done.

You'll be fine
