I had 14 teeth pulled to make room for dentures. The dentist "dug" them out and made a mess. 5 weeks later I am still getting bone spurs and the gums and bone are bent in protruding directions. My dentures don't fit and are painful. Can any one point me to some peace ?

IT IS NOT UNCOMMON TO REMOVE MANY TEETH AT ONE TIME AND INSERT IMMEDIATE DENTURES. THIS IS DONE VERY OFTEN.
HOWEVER, FOURTEEN TEETH ARE A LOT OF TEETH TO HAVE REMOVED AT ONE TIME. I ASSUME THE TEETH WERE IN BOTH THE UPPER AND LOWER ARCHES? SO THAT WOULD MEAN THAT YOU HAVE A NEW UPPER AND A NEW LOWER DENTURE?

THE "DIGGING" THAT YOU STATE INDICATES THAT YOUR TEETH WERE IN ROUGH SHAPE, PERHAPS BROKEN AND DECAYED AND MAYBE SOME EVEN HAD ROOT CANAL THERAPY IN THE PAST. TEETH WILL BECOME VERY BRITTLE/FRAGILE WHEN THEY ARE DISEASED AND THEY TEND TO BREAK DURING THE EXTRACTION OF THEM. SO THE ONLY MEANS OF REMOVING THE BROKEN PIECES IS TO DIG THEM OUT.
YOU ALSO MAY HAVE HAD PERIODONTAL DISEASE WHICH NOT ONLY CAUSES THE GUMS TO BE VERY INFLAMED BUT IT ALSO CAUSES THE BONE AND TEETH TO BECOME DISEASED. SO AGAIN A FRAGILE SITUATION REQUIRES MORE SURGERY.

BONE SPURS ARE EXPECTED TO OCCUR AFTER THE ORAL SURGERY THAT YOU HAVE HAD DONE. THIS IS THE RESULT OF THE FRAGILE AND DISEASED JAW BONE SPLINTERING DURING THE EXTRACTION OF YOUR TEETH. THE PIECES OF BONE THAT SPLINTERED OFF WILL CONTINUALLY WORK THEIR WAY OUT OF THE BONE AND THROUGH THE GUM. SOMETIMES THEY NEED A LITTLE MINOR SURGICAL INTERVENTION TO REMOVE THE ONES THAT ARE SHARP, PAINFUL OR INTERFERING WITH THE FIT OR COMFORT OF THE DENTURES.

THE GUMS AND BONE WILL LOOK ODD AND LUMPY DURING THE HEALING PHASE. THAT IS NORMAL IN MOST CASES, ESPECIALLY IF A SURGICAL ALVEOPLASTY, RE-CONTOURING OF THE BONE, WAS NOT DONE AT THE TIME OF THE EXTRACTIONS.

IF YOU HAD IMMEDIATE DENTURES MADE AND THEY WERE PLACED IMMEDIATELY AFTER THE EXTRACTIONS, THEN THEY ARE ACTING AS A TEMPLATE FOR THE FINAL HEALING OF THE BONE AND GUMS. HOWEVER THEY SHOULD FIT FAIRLY WELL BUT ALSO WILL NEED TO BE ADJUSTED AS MANY TIMES AS NECESSARY TO BE MORE COMFORTABLE DURING THE HEALING PHASE.

My questions for you...

1) Did you have an oral surgeon remove your teeth or was it done by your general dentist?

2) Did the dentist perform a surgical procedure called Alveoplasty at the time of the extractions? This is done AFTER all the teeth are removed and the dentist goes back and re-contours the shape of the bony ridge to remove any sharp bony protrusions or severe abnormalities.

3) Were the dentures placed immediately after the extractions and is it both upper and lower dentures?

4) Were you wearing a partial denture prior to the removal of these teeth?

5) How many times have you been back to your dentist for adjustments?

Hi thank you for your words of guidance. Originally I was told this was going to be done by the "oral surgeon" but on the day it was the General dentist. No Alveoplasty was preformed. After the 2.5 hours of yanking I my "upper and lower" dentures were filled with some goop and shoved in my mouth and I was sent home, with NO instructions. I've never had a partial. I went back after 2 weeks so that the "specialist" could remove a root that the other dentist couldn't, and the next day to remove two stubborn bone spurs. I go back on 10/2 for realignment.
