Default Wisdom tooth extraction side infection

Hi everyone

I got my upper left wisdom tooth extracted last Wednesday (it's Monday now), it was a very quick extraction took about 40 min from the moment i stepped in the door until it was done, I got 6 stitches on the site because the tooth was only a little bit poking through. From the x-ray it looked like the wisdom tooth was growing along my last tooth, but pushing on it at the same time so it caused some discomfort in my other teeth. I wanted to get it out especially because I had braces when about 10 years ago when i was 13 (i'm 23 now), and I didn't want this wisdom tooth to mess up my nicely aligned teeth.

So after the extraction it was pretty painful, but nothing unbearable without pain meds (the dentist didn't even prescribe me anything). Wednesday evening it was too painful to eat anything so I just drank liquids. By Thursday early morning (around 3-4am) I was able to eat congee and the pain was nothing compared to what I'm feeling now. Thursday my face started swelling, I thought it was normal since most people say swelling starts bit after extraction and peaks at 3rd day or so. But the pain and swelling got so bad on Friday and Saturday, I had to take advil every 4 hours or I'd end up crying from the pain. I still thought it was just normal swelling, but just worse for me because I get bruised easily.

Sunday morning after a night of not being able to sleep and sobbing in bed from the pain and swelling. I decided to call the dental emergency line to see if they could give me some stronger pain meds (I didn't think I had an infection because I didn't have any fever and my jaw is soft swollen not hard like some websites say). As soon as I told the lady who answered the phone that my face is super swollen and the pain keeps me from doing anything, and the swelling was going down my neck, she had no doubt I had an infection and got a doctor to prescribe me Amoxicillin for 8 days.

So now it's been over 36 hours since I took first dose of amoxicillin (1000mg first dose then 500mg every 8 hours after that). I think the swelling is going down, my skin doesn't feel as tight as yesterday but it still looks similar size. The pain is still unbearable without pain meds (I take 1 tylenol and 1 advil every 3-4 hours or the pain makes me sob in bed hating the world). The doctor did tell me to go back to the dentist if I don't feel better by tomorrow, and I was in a rush wanting him to call the pharmacy so I didn't ask questions... (my bad), but he did say I should start feeling better today, and look normal tomorrow. Here are some of my questions:

- How long will this pain from infection last?
- Do I need to go back to the dentist to have her open up my stitches and squeeze out stuff from infection? (I read that some people got this done for them when they go back for infection)
- should I book an appointment to see my dentist anyways even if I do feel better? Just to make sure everything is okay?
- Since it's the upper wisdom tooth, and I don't have a bad taste in my mouth, and it's stitched up, could I still get dry socket? (I read that upper teeth almost never get dry sockets)
- Most of the pain is above the 3rd-4th tooth from my front tooth (half way between my eye and my lip on my cheek), not so much at the back of the jaw, is this normal? Or infection maybe has travelled and some other important part of me is now infected?

Thanks for reading my long *** post! Hope I get some reassurance and answers!

Hi yvonnars,

It is best to see your dentist for an evaluation of the site and an xray to see if there is pathology in the bone. There may be a piece of broken tooth or splinter of bone, there could be a sinus perforation and/or an infection brewing .... etc. There is no way anyone online can tell you what is going on as you have a variety of symptoms that could indicate an infection and/or more than one thing going on at this time. It is best to have this evaluated clinically asap, even if your symptoms subside.
