Default Random pain several days after extraction

I got both wisdom teeth taken out on the left side on wed oct. 22. The top was a simple extraction while the bottom had to be surgically removed. I rinse with salt water and apply warm towel compress regularly. The swelling went down for the most part, though the lower jaw is still a little tender. Its been 7 days and i woke up suddenly at 3:30 am with sharp pains. The pains went away after about five minutes and i applied a warm towel and rinsed with salt water just to be sure. My gums are yellow and occasionaly my saliva has a yellowish color to it. Is this cause for concern or am i healing normally. Thank you in advance

Hi Ryanc,

It is normal to have pain or tenderness for several days or weeks after the removal of wisdom teeth. Waking up with sharp pain in your jaw could indicate many things. You could have had your jaw angled in an odd position while sleeping and the muscle could have went into spasm. That would explain why the pain went away so quickly.

Applying warm towel compresses is a good idea. It would be ideal if those compresses were moist heat as that helps the blood to circulate rather than pool in one area. Continue with the warm salt water rinses until both wounds close.

The yellow discoloration may be normal or it may be some bacteria that is oozing from the site which the salt water will help take care of. If the yellow increases and/or you develop swelling, lingering pain, fever, any symptoms that could indicate an infection brewing, then see the oral surgeon right away. Otherwise continue with the warm (moist) compresses and salt water rinses and see him at your post op appointment in a week or two. It is also a good idea to drink water throughout the day as this helps remove the toxins and bacteria from your body and helps with the healing.

I hope this information was helpful. Please check back with us and let us know how you are doing.

Thank you for the feedback. I am continuing to feel dull pain in the bottom jaw. There is no swelling present though the popping in my ear has returned when i swallow.

Ryan,

You did not mention popping in your ear in your first post. Has this been happening since the surgery or did you have it prior to that?

Have you ever had problems with your TMJ? Do you clench or grind your teeth?

I initially felt the popping for the first 2 days after extraction. It had went away up until the day i saw your response to my post. The popping is still here. I checked the extraction site as i often do while brushing and the inside of the cheek near extraction has a few red spots. There are is a white spot. It doesnt hurt or look like puss. There is no swelling present

Hi Ryan,

The popping can be due to having had your mouth open wide for the dentist to gain access to your wisdom teeth. In some people even opening their mouth really wide for just a minute can cause some inflammation in the jaw joint while others it can occur from having dental work. Once the ligament and muscle calms down that popping should go away. But it can take weeks for that to happen as it is not possible to rest your jaw for any length of time as you use it a lot. If the popping becomes painful or worsens, then see the oral surgeon.

The red spots near the extraction site can be little ulcerations that frequently pop up within 4-10 days after dental work such as yours. They can get pretty sore and last up to 21 days. Keep rinsing with the warm salt water as this will help.

Are the gums still yellow and do you still notice yellow in your saliva?
When is your post op appointment with the surgeon?
