Anytime you have oral surgery, you are going to have an unpleasant taste and breath odor because you have surgical wounds that are deep into the bone and bacteria infiltrates the area as it is healing. If there is no infection, the taste and odor will slowly dissipate as the sites heal.

With that said, sometimes the odor and taste are due to infection. In your case, the only one who knows what's lurking in the surgical sites is the surgeon who has performed the surgeries.

When he did these second surgeries, did he place new bone grafts in those areas? Did he instruct you to rinse "twice" a day with chlorhexidine?

Did he put you on more antibiotics?

The surgeon didn't place new bone grafts. He said the bone graft was intact.

I was prescribed an antibiotic which I finished and am taking chlorhexidine twice daily.

leesal,

Did I understand you correctly, the oral surgeon left the bone grafts in the sites that he debrided?

Yes he made an incision and said infection was present next to the extraction site which he irrigated and cleaned out with Chlorhexidine.

Is this not the correct way to do this?

leesal,

I cannot tell you, based on your descriptions or without visible evidence, whether the dentist is taking care of your infection properly or not.

Generally, when the surgical site is infected the graft material is compromised.

You are either going to have to trust this dentist or seek a different oral surgeon to evaluate everything that has been done up to the current status.

What is the pain level at now? Is there any swelling? How are you feeling physically?

Wednesday I go back to the surgeon and told him I still have a bad taste with some pain present. He looks at the graft on the lower left, tells me it looks red and inflamed then says he needs to do another surgery to clean it out and clean off the top of the bone incase there's any bacteria present. He was going to take an Xray and do the procedure when I went Wednesday which I refused to let him do.

He also told me he thought the graft may not have worked.

I went back to that Dr. because I paid so much money however, I'm 7 weeks post op and based on what's happened with my case, feel he's not competent.

I've spoken to another surgeon and will let him do the treatment that needs to be done.

I put a call in to another oral surgeon I consulted with and will have him do the next procedure.

leesal,

I am relieved that you are consulting with a different oral surgeon. These repetitive surgeries are not favorable and obviously you still have infection.

Hopefully this new surgeon will be able to properly undue what has already been done. I feel so badly for you.... this has been a really tough situation!

I would suggest that you ask your new surgeon to make detailed notes of all of his findings as well as the procedures that he will be performing to take care of the situation. Just tell him that you want everything to be clear so that in case you run into another problem it will be easier to remedy. Do not mention anything negative about the original surgeon or that you are angry with him or that you might sue him or anything like that. You need the new surgeon to be your ally not your enemy.

I am suggesting this to you in case you decide to request your money back from the original surgeon and/or you decide to bring legal action against him. Well written records are imperative if you proceed with anything like that.

Keep us posted.....
