Default Wisdom teeth extraction site..started bleeding after 7 days

Hi Bryanna,

My 18 year old son just had his two lower windom teeth extracted on March 25, 2015 by an oral surgeon and everything was fine until his lower left site started bleeding again on April 1 (1 week later). His right side already all closed up and looks fine. We went back to have the surgeon to take a look and he said everything is fine. Now my son still has dark red blood coming out from the site once in a while. What could be the problem? Is it proper to remove the wisdom teeth even before they erupture from the gum. Thank you in advance for any insight.

P.S. His two wisdom teeth was still not came out from the gum before the surgery.

Hi ono8ono,

It is common for wisdom teeth to be removed before they have erupted through the gum if the teeth are causing some interference with the second molars or they are suspected to have grown cysts around them.

It is not uncommon for the extraction sites of wisdom teeth to ooze a tiny bit of dark blood for the first couple of weeks post op. It really does not signify anything to be concerned about. If the blood should become more in volume rather than less as time goes on.... if he has any unexpected swelling .... sudden unpleasant breath odor .... pain ... fever ..... swollen glands... anything that could indicate an infection, then he would need to see the oral surgeon to evaluate it. Otherwise, if it is healing well and there is an occasional slight bleeding until the gum tissue closed over, I wouldn't be concerned.
