Ok, let us know what he says on tuesday.
In the meantime, continue with the warm salt water rinses and cut back on smoking as much as you possibly can =)

I had this done several years ago. Did everything go perfectly...no, but my tooth was infected and had to go. I really haven't had many problems since. My sinuses have always been a little out of whack so I'm more than used to having issues when the seasons change. But honestly...it really wasn't that bad. Best of luck to all of us.

Had appointment date wrong as it was actually today instead of yesterday, though I went yesterday to find that out lol. In any case he says it all looks fine and to keep doing what I've been doing. Also I am to be careful with sneezing and nose blowing while watching for any signs that it is leaking air or fluid. I guess it should be all good in another week as long as I am careful not to blow it open again.

dont want to have a surgery

hi, i had my upper molar tooth extracted last feb18 and sinusitis got worse. i feel drowsiness, facial pain, and bad odor from my left nose.
i just wanted to know if there alternatives aside from surgery to close the hole...:o

Bryanna 03-02-2011 06:12 PM

Hi fionzy,

Was there a sinus exposure during the extraction of the tooth? Did you develop sinusitis after the extraction or did you have it before?

Your description of symptoms are indicative of a sinus infection. Have you visited your doctor or dentist?

My son is having foul smelling drainage. Dentist says all is ok. When should we get another opinion. It has been over a week and son was told to not blow his nose it would cause more damage. HELP

Hi Webster,

It is common for the first week or two, to have an unpleasant odor from the mouth and nose after any tooth extraction. The smell is caused by the open surgical site. However, if your son had a sinus exposure or even a near sinus exposure occur during the extraction of his tooth... and the odor is getting progressively worse, then he should be checked by the dentist and an xray of that area could be helpful in diagnosing that.

Did he see the dentist recently....was there an xray taken?

Hi bryanna, I have a question. My sinuses have been really bad. Its my tooth 18, bottom molar on the left side. I'm getting it removed today. Do you think that will solve my problems? Headaches, face feelis like its on fire. After the extraction. Any tips?

Hi Rams,

Well I can see that you've been doing some reading! Good for you!

The procedure to remove the root tip depends on where it is located in your sinuses. The Caldwell luc is considered a very invasive procedure and is typically done to remove tumors or large cysts. Sometimes, the combination of the caldwell luc and transnasal endoscopy can be done which is a bit less invasive because the endoscopy is the primary entry from which the matter is removed.

Generally, a root tip that has been pushed into the sinuses is first monitored with panoramic xrays and then a CT scan to see the exact location and to see if a cyst has developed around the root tip. Sometimes no treatment is needed and other times it is best to surgically remove it. If the root tip ends up with a growth of tissue around it like a barrier, it could block off some of the natural openings in the sinuses causing infection and difficulty breathing through that side of your nose.

If it were me, I would have the area monitored periodically to see if any changes are taking place and also be aware of any symptoms of blockage or infection.

If the root tip is not far up into the sinus, then it may be surgically removed with a minor caldwell luc procedure. But it is imperative that a surgeon who is well versed and well skilled in this type of procedure be sought to do it.

Please let us know what you decide to do........ all the best to you!!

Hi dolphindanny,

Well, your lower teeth are not directly connected to any sinus issues. However, if you have an infected tooth anywhere in your mouth and the infection has become systemic, which means it has made you physically ill, then the infection could travel to your upper respiratory system which could ultimately involve your sinuses.

How did the extraction go today? I suggest that you follow your dentists post operative instructions as best as possible to avoid secondary infection. Did you tell him/her that your sinuses have been bothering you?
