Hi mattparker,
The dentist who extracted the wisdom tooth, was she a general dentist or an oral surgeon? Sometimes the wisdom tooth is laying in the bone right up against the second molar or in very close proximity. Bacteria gets in between the two teeth and causes decay to occur on one or both teeth. The decay can be on the root surface of the second molar which can cause pain, infection and loss of the that tooth. Depending on where the decay is on the root, it may be impossible to restore properly. Any chance you could get the pre op xray of that area emailed to you and then post it here for me to see?
