JenLRhodes,
Excellent! You are going about this the right way as you get both the OS and the ENT on board with your care. Stick with this path until you are comfortable with a resolution. In the meantime, take excellent care of yourself nutritionally as this will have a huge positive impact on your eventual recovery. If the infection is in the bone graft, then the os can remove it and thoroughly debride the surgical site, sinus and all. Replacing the graft at that same time is a judgement call with the os. But it should not be placed if there is any slight suspicion that infection is still present in the tissue, the bone or the sinus. The purpose of the initial bone graft was to help preserve the formation of new bone growth as there is always at least 50% bone loss with every extraction. However, infected graft material is a problem and should come out. Please keep us posted... Bryanna Quote:

Hi Bryanna,
So it looks like i'm going to have to have sinus surgery. The Oral Surgeons think the graft has integrated well, and that it may have been where the infection got in, but it's not infected itself. I will say that my gums are sometimes tender from all the sinus swelling. I'm scheduled to have Sinus Surgery April 13th. Hopefully this resolves the issue. I have suffered from chronic sinusitis in the past (usually my other nostril). I'm worried, of course, that i'll go through it and it won't. The culture came back as Staph (the non-scary kind, as she put it after she gave me the latin name). Cipro does kill it, which is why i would feel better while on Antibiotics, but i guess it just couldn't get all of it. I'll keep you posted. |
