I'm not a fan of pain meds either , last time I was using Arnica and that was enough, but that was a simple extraction. I'm afraid this time it will be more painful because of the broken root. I'll take a probiotic 2x a day if he gives me antibiotic, and actually I'm allergic to some antibiotics so I'm so afraid to take them.
My extraction is tomorrow morning.
Thank you so much Bryanna.

Nyuszisie,

Please be sure to discuss your sinus issues with the oral surgeon. Also be sure to let him know that you want to know if he found a sinus communication, if so, how large and what did he do to treat it.
Never assume that the surgeon will know that you have sinus problems or that he will just know to look for these things.

Keep in mind that the surgeon is familiar with removing broken teeth, root fractures and root canaled teeth. If he knows that you are concerned about residual infection and post op complications, then he will be more inclined to be more thorough with his surgery. Think of that statement as you putting that thought into his head just before he removes the tooth.

I'm sure you will be fine. Please try to get some rest tonight and drop us a note tomorrow sometime.

Bryanna

So tooth #14 is out, but I don't know any details because the OS just told my husband that "everything went well ". He didn't prescribe me any antibiotics.
It still bleeding after 4 -4,5 hours, I change the gauze every 30-45 mins. I hope it will stop soon. I'm afraid it won't stop.
I will ask the OS questions when he calls tomorrow to check on me.

Nyuszisue,

Okay, glad that's done. How did the sedation go? Did he suture the site? What did he say about your chronic sinus problems.... did he say it was okay to use a saline nasal spray? Are you using the Arnica as directed on the bottle?

Only put the gauze in place if the surgical site is oozing. Otherwise, leave it out. If you use the gauze make sure to moisten it VERY slightly before putting it in as dry gauze can pull the blood clot out. Also if you use the gauze, place it and bite down on it for 30-40 minutes without moving your mouth. It is the pressure that will stop the bleeding. If you keep moving your mouth while you have the gauze in there it will keep bleeding.

If the site keeps "oozing" you can slightly moisten a clean tea bag and gently bite down on that instead of the gauze. The tannin in the tea will help to clot the blood.

It would be best to keep your head elevated and sleep on a couple of pillows tonight. Some bleeding is normal throughout the next day or so.

Yea, please speak to him about a possible sinus communication or perforation.

Hope you have a comfortable night. Please keep us posted, when you can, on how you're doing.

Finally it stopped bleeding after 5 hours, after I put wet teabag on the site.
The sedation went well. Yes, he sutured the extraction site and in the brochure they give out says they use dissolvable sutures.
I use the Arnica as it says on the bottle ( this is the 30 C , 5 pellets 3x a day ).
I will ask him about the sinus connection and about the saline nasal spray tomorrow when he calls. I forgot about the spray this morning, but I asked him to let me know about the sinus connection before he started the procedure, I don't know how he missed telling anything about that to my husband. I also asked him about cleaning the site, he said at the end they rinse it with antibiotic solution. So hopefully he did a good job.
In they brochure it also says it's normal to have a slightly elevated temperature for 24-48 hours. Is it really OK ? I checked my temp. about 30 mins ago because I felt a little hot, it was 98.6.
Thanks !!

So things are getting complicated. Last night I noticed like air is coming trough the extraction site, and sure enough this morning when I was doing my first saline water rinse the water came out of my left nostril ( the extraction was on upper left side ).
Now I'm wondering didn't the OS see the perforation yesterday or it could've opened later in the day ? He didn't call me yet so I didn't talked to him about this yet, I don't know what is he going to do now. One of my biggest reason in deciding to do the sedation was this, if I had a sinus communication he can close it while I'm out. Now I'll have to go back to do whatever he needs to do only on local anesthetic ? How bad is that ? I'm so scared.

I called the OS ( just couldn't wait for the call ). He said to do the salt water rinses gently, use the saline nasal spray, and go back for a follow up in a week. Is that good enough ?
Thank you Bryanna again for your time and answers. I'm so worried it not going to be good.

Sorry , I just keep adding my questions.
I just noticed that my hole face is red, my nose is burning and my eyes too. My temp. is still 98.6.
I just planning to do another salt water rinse after I eat something. Is really ok to do that if it comes out of the nose ? I take Arnica ,my pain is mostly because of the stitches , that's how it feels.

nyuszisue,

What did the os say about the sinus opening? Did you ask him when it occurred? Was it during the extraction?...Was it evident on the xray that it was open prior to the extraction and caused by the infected tooth? ... How large is it? Did he put in a bone graft?

You need to continue the warm salt water oral rinses. The nasal irrigation is helpful depending on the size of the sinus perforation, so I cannot comment on whether to continue that or not.

The discoloration of your face indicates inflammation which may or may not be normal. The burning sensation can be from the sinus perforation as the salt water may be too strong. Just use a pinch of salt in 3 ounces of water to rinse with. If you are not improved by tomorrow, or you develop a fever or further symptoms, call the os and ask questions about the sinus opening.

Continue with the Arnica as directed and hopefully that is all you will need to take to manage the pain.

Please be sure to drink plenty of water throughout the day to keep hydrated and keep you diet to soft nutritious foods at least for another week or so.

I hope you are feeling better tomorrow..... hang in there... you're going to be okay.
Bryanna

My face is swollen a little since last night, in the brochure from the dentist it says it can swell for the first 3 days and stay swollen for a week. Is that OK ? Can I do something for the swelling ?
My face is not red anymore, but last night after the salt water rinsing the extraction site was hurting pretty bad, I had to take Motrin. I do just a pinch of salt.
The OS didn't say anything when the sinus opening occurred or how big is it ( I asked ). I don't think it was there before the surgery he didn't mention it when he had the dental scan taken few weeks earlier. And I don't think he did a bone graft. He said I can have bleeding from the left nostril for a few weeks, don't blow my nose, don't use a straw and those general things, so I assume the opening occurred during the extraction but he thought it's small and it will close on it's own in a few weeks. He knew about my concern about the sinus opening, I asked him several times before the surgery.
