Default Grinding teeth and guards......

From my other posts, you can read I had an accident and front teeth dying. Dentist wanted to mouth guard because i grind. It is $800. I cannot do that.
Does anyone use the ones you form yourself, like those $30 ones with success? I tried to do one, but my teeth hurt bad when hot like the mold is when you bite down. But I can try if anyone says they are good.
ALSO, I read you can SWALLOW them?! Oh goodness. Is that true? Are there any that go over your head like a a retainer?
