Confused Root canal or extraction?

Hi, I've had this spot on my upper left gum for around 2 months. It was white at first and has only started bleeding when brushed. The gum area above it hurts if touched too but that started maybe 4 months ago after I experienced my second round of wisdom tooth pain. I have an impact wisdom tooth so I thought all this was the cause of that. But I went to the dentist today and they said my tooth (next to my molar upper left) is infected and is causing the infection to escape from this spot. Ive never experienced pain in this tooth so I was shocked when I was told I need a root canal. This tooth already has a filling and with it needing this surgery I'm not sure whether it's worth it. I'm 19 and have 4 fillings altogether but have never had a root canal or tooth extraction.

I'm worried because he took an ex-ray and said it was infected in around one minute. Is it possible he is 100% correct or if this spot was caused by my impacted wisdom tooth? If I get it extracted will it be a better option? If my teeth have move room to move will it allows my wisdom tooth to come through and cause more pain? Should I get a root canal and then a crown for it to possibly be unsuccessful and have the infection spread?

When I went to the dentist around 4 months ago (when I was experiencing wisdom tooth pain and my gum was sore) he didn't note any infection. Can an infection happen in that small amount of time in which a spot forms?

I suppose I'm wary of dentists, all the fillings I have I have never experienced tooth pain previously. Once I had a check up and was informed I needed a small filling, so a couple days later I went to get it done just to be informed that I needed a larger one on my bottom tooth! it hardly looks like a tooth cause all I see is filling this was done by a different dentist however, and they misdiagnosed that I had an abscess and prescribed antibiotics, only then I went to a dental hospital and found out it was a wisdom tooth!

I'm sorry for the ramble! I just really don't know what to do. And it's over xmas when I have a huge university paper to write I know something is up so I believe it is infected, just do I risk saving a tooth that'll have problems later... or take it out and not have to worry again? help
