Default Pain 5 days after cavity filling

I had a cavity filling done earlier this week. There was previously and old filling there that may have come off, developed a cavity again and has to get it filled again. All I had a few days after the procedure was sensitivity to hot and cold which I was told was normal. I had to go back 4 days later because there was a jagged edge cutting into my tongue. After the dentist polished it down I had pain develop which continued to come back after the Advil I took wore off. I went back to my dentist this morning and she took an X-ray and said the filling is deep but not to the point where it would affect anything, and wants me to see an endodontist. Has anyone else experienced this before and did the pain end up settling down? I really do not want a root canal- the last two root canals I had eventually failed and I ended up having to get those teeth extracted.
