Hi everyone,

Earlier this year I had a tooth filled and the dentist, even though she knew I was a diabetic used anesthetic that she told me was rough on the kidneys.

That needle didn't work, so she pumped another one in and she was injecting for 35 seconds (I counted), I have NEVER had someone pump that much on a 22nd injection. That numbed the area; I had the work done and went home.

On the way home I started to feel very unwell, pains in my kidneys that were spreading upward and making me feel like I had been kicked. I also felt very fatigued.

After I got home it got worse, I was unable to sit or stand, I couldn't move around well but I was pacing the kitchen with the pain. I became worse so I called the emergency nurse practitioner and she told me I should go to hospital if it didn't get better soon. I said I would but being agoraphobic and very ill at ease in public situations, especially hospitals I couldn't bring myself to it.

Since then I have had a constant pain in my kidneys, moving round to my sides and at times into my abdomen. It is constantly going up my back but does resolve to just the kidney area. I've been totally lethargic, feeling nauseated, reduced appetite, less urine output. Worst of it is that since it happened I am bowel incontinent and my large colon does not work at all. Only the small bowel is active and that is why I am incontinent.

I'd really like to know if the incontinence could be from the terrible effects of those anesthetics? If anyone knows could you please advice me? Thanks

The type and amount of local anesthetics used in dentistry for a routine filling will not be the cause of any damage to your kidneys. The second injection that you had which lasted for "35 seconds" was only one carpule of anesthetic, which is minimal. The reason it seemed to take so long was because she was injecting it at a very slow rate, which is the ideal way to give a local anesthetic when trying to achieve little discomfort during the injection and profound anesthesia.

The systemic affects of this injection left your body within hours of the initial injection. So the problems that occurred after your visit and longer are most likely related to something else going on in your body. Sometimes patients are very tense in the dental chair and will experience body pain after their dental appointment from being so tensed up. This pain can linger for several hours to a few days. Sometimes patients feel weak or a bit out of it after their dental appointment which is generally a stress relief reaction.... this feeling can last a few hours, or longer.

The fact that you have not been eating properly could indicate that you have not been drinking enough water as well. Dehydration can cause a decrease in urine output, kidney pain, constipation and all of the other symptoms that you posted.

Perhaps a blood work up with your physician would be helpful to see what's going on. If the pain in your kidney area is as bad as you have described, then this is not something to ignore.
