I was referred here by a very nice lady on another forum I belong to.

I went to the dentist recently and was told that the roof of my mouth is gray rather than pink. I went back two weeks later and it is still gray. It doesnt hurt, it doesnt wipe off, etc. My dentist is going to confer with her specialists and refer me on. She said I may need a biospy.

Does anyone know what this is ? It's the entire roof of my mouth , not the back or my throat and some near the back teeth inside cheek gum area.

She said it doesnt appear to be an infection either.

Hi Stacey,

There could be any number of reasons why your palate has turned gray. I'll name a few and perhaps something will trigger your memory........

Ingesting lead (even unknowingly in your water supply) or drugs that contain silver (you would be surprised at this one!) or even some digestive meds like pepto bismol can discolor the palate gray.

Do you drink colloidal silver?

Sometimes a discoloration in the mouth indicates another disorder going on in the body. Have you had a recent physical with complete bloodwork?

Smoking cigars, cigarettes, a pipe or chewing tobacco can cause discoloration and more progressive health issues.

It is wise to have this looked at further and a biopsy may be necessary to determine a definitive diagnosis. Usually an oral surgeon would do this type of procedure.

Please try not to worry... be very aware of your daily habits ..... have your water checked by the board of health or a water company .......... and get a thorough physical exam with your physician.

I dont drink any of that stuff. I eat normal...drink normal..probably dont drink enough water. I take darvocett. Could that be it ?

I havent heard back from my dentist as far a referral...maybe I'll need to refer myself.

I have an autoimmune disease called CIDP.

Hi Stacey,

Keep in mind that you could have been exposed to something awhile ago and may not have noticed the discoloration or the grey tone may just be surfacing now with a previous exposure.

Your water could contain lead, silver and a sleu of other stuff that you are unaware of. It shouldn't be hard to have a water test done by your local health department if you were curious about it's content.

Other things that contain silver salts that could turn any part of the body a grayish color are:

Industrial exposure to lead or silver as in mining or refining.
Metal alloy manufaturing, photographic processing, electroplating solutions.
Cutting or polishing silver.
Silverware that is sterling silver or silver plated rather than stainless.
Metallic films on glassware and/or china.

Others......
Some nose drops or nasal irrigation solutions.
Some wound dressings.
Some eye drops.
Some toothpastes.

There are so many sources and you may have or are exposing yourself to one or more of these without knowing it.

Stacey, I just read your post and I am anxious to hear how you went with this grey colour in your mouth. I have just taken my five year old son to the dentist, to be told he has a grey patch on the roof of his mouth. The dentist says she has never seen this before and to take my son to the doctor for a checkup. I have made an appointment but can't get in to see a doctor for another few days. Can you please let me know if you were able to get any answers as to what this grey color is. I am very worried about my little boy and my imagination is going crazy thinking about horrible scenarios. If anyone else has any suggestions, could they please help me. Many thanks...
