Exclamation Terrible tooth pain and now a lump in my jaw

Hi,

I came across this forum and wanted some advice cocerning some terrible tooth pain that i went through ...

About a week ago ... i woke up to a terrible tooth ache, the pain was unexplainable and so severe that it caused swelling on the right side of my face.... also during the tooth pain i was not able to touch anything on my tooth (not my tongue, or my other teeth), or it would cause terrible pain. After four days of a swelled face and pain ...i still am not able to eat anything on the right side of my mouth (thats where the pain occured) and my teeth still hurt if they touch each other.

The swelling has gone now but i have a lump in my jaw ... it doesnt hurt when i touch it but i feel like its getting bigger...and depending on the movements that i do with my mouth it kinda hurts ...

I recieved fillings about a year ago ...i dont know what caused the toothpain as i dont have any holes in my tooth but the pain came from under the tooth and went all the way through a few of my bottom teeth...they kinda hurt now if i touch them too ... my gums around my tooth is also swelled up and hurt....

i'm really confused and scared....

what could be the cause of this and whats happening to my tooth?

Please help and respond soon...

btw: I am hoping to see a dentist sometime this week

sorry for the long post and thanx in advance

Hi Safia,

You have an infection that has spread from your tooth to your jawbone and it needs to be treated ASAP. Do not wait, get in to see your dentist.

You do not need to have a hole in a tooth to have a problem. The nerve inside the tooth which is not visible to you has become infected. That occurs when there is decay (could be under the filling) and/or the nerve has been traumatized, which can happen anytime a tooth is drilled into.

Again, this is considered an emergency and you should not wait to have it treated. The dentist will take xrays and determine which tooth/teeth are infected. You may be given the option of root canal or extraction. This will not go away on it's own, it will spread, so please don't wait.

Please let us know how you are doing.

Hey Bryanna,

Thanks so much for your reply.

I'm so glad that i at least know now whats happening to my tooth (but at the same time i feel scared).

I tried to make an appointment with the dentist this week but they didnt have any available for this week. So they told me i can make one for monday, and i did. (I'll be sure to let you know how things go at the dentist) I am looking forward to getting this thing done with...but if its okay with you...i have one more question.

Since you said i will have the option of a root canal or an extraction...which would be the best option for me to go with in this case? Or should i expect my dentist to tell me?...

I've seen videos of root canal being done and it freaks me out lol ...but whatever needs to be done i'll be willing to do ...

Also, is there anything that i should do while i wait for my appointment on monday?

Thanx for all your help...

Hi PaigeL

The lump could be a few different things. It is BEST that you see a dentist as soon as possible because it could be an infection.

Let us know how your dental appointment goes.

Default jaw lump

I have a serious lump on the side of my jaw. I have no teeth above the area where the lump is, so I don't think it's an abscess. It sticks out and is very noticible. It's about 2 inches across. Do you have a clue as to what it could be?

Hi sunshinevinny,

You do not need teeth to have an infection in your jawbone. How long has the lump been there? Did it just appear overnight or has it taken awhile to get this large? Is it tender or sore? Have you been feeling unwell, feverish or anything like that?
