Default Is Your Vit D at an optimal level?

My personal story on Depression. 10+ long years from 1991-2002

I came in from a long life of SUN bathing, beaches on East and West Coast where I now live. I was about 53 when I pretty much left my Sun Days.

In 1991 at age 53, I found myself struggling with "clinical" depression. I tried Prozac in 1991 and it did nothing, so a therapist told me to get off it. I did.

So thinking more about myself and what was going on, came to the realization it was most likely a sluggish thyroid. I worked with an MD for 10 yrs and he kept telling me "you are good, your numbers are good"....I was depressed. So he started with the scripts for anti depressants....10 yrs of a mix of various A/D's.....I'm still suffering with the dreaded depression.

Then in 2002, I was talking to my D.O. who worked on my back for years and he immediately called in for Armour thyroid and that 10 yrs of depression lifted in 4 days. Ok, I'm going along feeling much better and working to get to that right dose for me.

Enter late 2006, I was feeling a lowness, not great depression but a lowness. Not me. Talking to my sister who is challenged with MS and listening to her talking about Vit D and how important it was for everyone including her of course with MS. I believe at the time she was taking the 50K script from a doctor.

So with this info, I talked to an MD I was seeing and we decided to test my D and I was a LOW 16, he tested himself as he was no curious, he was a LOWER 13.

Now it all begins with the Vit D dosing and in 6 months I brought my level up to 34, I remember so much of these important times in my life and my health.

Going along and getting semi annual labs on D, I finally got to 80 and I was feeling Great. Still taking thyroid BUT getting Vit D into my body.

Then in 2010, I went for a hip replacement and had read/heard Vit D levels can drop with surgery and sure enough mine dropped 40 pts. So now I'm back down to 40or so. So now working to get back up there and then heard about the K2 research needed for Vit D activity/absorption.

At this time I take 5K D3 and K2 in the form of MK7 daily. Some days I take 10K D3. I hardly get any sun as my walking is so awful from a messed hip replacement in 2010. So I depend on D and K to keep from depression and do thyroid support.

So what I've come to, is Vit D is most likely the first line of attack on all this depression, I'm now thinking it should have been for me. I was never depressed when I spent all those years in the sun.

Thyroid too, but Vit D foremost. This is my thinking on what I've been through. And to think HOW MANY are existing with low Vit D and their doctors should be bringing up Vit D firstly.

This all came to me in the last couple days since the Vitamin D post on the Vit/Supp/Herb area.

Here is a good reading link on Vit D and Depression.

Keep working on healing all.
