New to this. Using my Dad's glucose monitor (he passed away in 2009 at age 95).

My fasting BS @ 10 was 98.

One hour later, after a breakfast that consisted of:

1 slice toasted whole wheat bread
1 scrambled egg w/cheese added
1 cup 2% milk
4 fresh strawberries (no added sugar)

my BS was 29. Whuh? Is that possible?

I didn't have any OJ in the fridge, so ate a tsp. of raspberry jam.

Tested again 5 min. later and got a BS readout of 119.

This makes NO sense whatsoever to me!!!


The FreeStyle monitor does a little self-test before you can submit the blood sample. I don't poke my finger -- just stab my forearm to get a dot of blood.

Either your strips are old, or the battery needs replacing.

You would not be conscious at the 29 reading you got, I don't think.

Yes, it's possible to be conscious at 29, I've heard of people at 11 talking.

Most likely either the strip was out dated, your test site wasn't clea.n

pick up a TruTest meter, comes with 50 strips I think. Any chain drug store should have it, around $23. Get a poker too. I prefer to use the sides of my fingers, not the pad. Hurts way less. I bruise like I've been beaten using forearm.

I didn't know cleaning the site affected the readout -- guess I'd better use those alcohol wipes more religiously.

If there is any alcohol left on the skin, that will also affect the reading.

OneTouch will give an "error #" to warn of this.

OneTouch and Freestyle use different chemical systems.
The Freestyle will read other ---ose sugars as high. Maltose, etc.

OneTouch is more accurate, but will read high if you use aspirin right before, or have elevated uric acid, or acidosis.

Most of the meters today are very accurate. One Touch reads the sample twice. It can give 5 error messages if you do something wrong by mistake.

I think the technology today is really swift. The new mini One Touch is free, or only $19.99 in stores.

Older meters? meh? can't say for them as things have changed radically very recently. And don't expect the batteries to last more than a year at regular use. The batteries can decline and give very inaccurate readings.

Well assuming that its not just a meter malfunction its possible you had a reactive hypo. This happens when someone still has pancreatic function and is on the road to diabetes. Basically what happens is because your bodies primary insulin response isnt working as well as it should your blood sugar rises quite high but then your secondary insulin response will kick in but will actually produce too much insulin and make you hypo. Its fairly common thing that most people with type 2 will have experienced over the years before becoming full on type 2.
