My A1C is very normal and my fasting glucose is 5.6-5.8mmol/L (3 tests). I have neuropathy in my hands and feet of unknown cause.
Is a glucose tolerance test going to be useful in my case? Would I be wasting my money getting a meter for home monitoring? |

You could get the LONG GTT test to see if you have reactive hypoglycemia. (this starves nerves)... but it has to be at least 4 hrs long or longer to show up. Many doctors don't understand this fine point.
If you show any abnormality then, a home meter may be helpful. Keep in mind the home meters are not that accurate.. +- 10 pts on each reading. Some people show spikes in postprandial (after eating) levels, and this can suggest a beginning pre-diabetic state. You can get really fixated on glucose levels, however, and if your personality is prone to this OCD kind of effect, than after finding out the details, you don't need to continue testing so often. Just change your food intake to reflect what you learn from the GTT etc.

I'm convinced at this point that my nerve pain has a diabetic component as well as something else. I am on month 16 or so of vegan eating. While I know many people couldn't imagine I was and am fed up. I have since applied this measure to any potential aid in this battle- what is the down side, is it nuts, if so harmful or likely harmful- no? good.
I use my meter for stretches- they will not allow me more thsn three strips a day. I get better results I believe out of testing less days, but mpre times on the days I do. If the readings are odd, more testing. I can feel changes easily now, Kreskinish in my calling of my numbers The numbers themselves are not the crux in my case, rather how long it takes for them to fall after a meal. I think it depends on the person. See if your physician will write a script for the meter. My best, Jon

The meters are usually free. Check that out before buying.
It is the strips that cost a bundle.

Hmm, mine was only free because of a script. Perhaps each state is different?
