Default Gestational Diabetes

My daughter is into her 6th month of her first pregancy and just failed the first glucose tolerance test. She's getting the next, longer one done this next week. There were other test results that led them to doing the glucose tolerance test. And there's is a lot of diabetes on her father's side of the family.

I've Googled it and of course there's tons of info out there and some of it, even from reputable sources, is conflicting.

Can anyone tell me or point me to sources that can help, what does she need to do? Diet I know but finding even a somewhat definitive guideline has been almost impossible. We want to keep her from having to be put on insulin. Of course she's blown away by this even though she knew she might be facing T2D somewhere down the line.

I told her to think of this as an early warning that most people don't get. Is there a good chance she can control this life long without having to end up on insulin? Once the baby is born she'll go back to 'normal' but this is like saying, "Yep, it's just a matter of time before you *do* have it, full blown."

Default No neccesarrily so

Thiry six years ago I gave birth to a 10llb 6 oz daughter. She did not live. They determined that I had gestational diabetes too late. Same thing with the birth of my second child, a boy weighing 8 lbs and 6 oz and delberately delivered 6 weeks earlly. I did deliver a healthy boy but it was because I
was watching. Big babies, but I'm 36 years past those births and no diabetes has shown up. Get her a high risk pregnancy advisor or OB.

Yes! Big babies is one of the main concerns. That is one thing I've seen that was consistant. Thirty six years ago they didn't know anywhere near what they know now about getational diabetes. I'm so sorry for your losses.

Not sure if her insurance will pay for that. The high risk advisor. She's seeing the same doctors she's seen since she was a child and I'm not sure what they have available. I'll pass this info along to her though so she can ask them. She's to have a second, longer, test done this coming Monday I think it is. We'll know for sure then.

So far everything is looking good. The baby appears to be normal for this point in the pregnancy.

I'm glad to hear that you've never gone on to T2D. On top of all the other things that you're dealing with that would be adding insult to injury. I'm hoping the same for my daughter.

Default jarrett

I hope things go well for your daughter. Perhaps her regular doctor can refer her to a specialist, some insurance does allow a referral.

Default Hi

Had this with all 3 of my kids, they were all in the 6 lb. range. Never had to
go on insulin but had to be on bed rest, with first and second. Would
reccoment high risk Dr. This is a lot more common then you would think,
and after baby is born most mom and baby do fine. She really should
have a dietition to help her with her weight. Good luck to her and baby
and you.. Sue
