Default How much Humalog should I take?

Hi.

The reason I am asking is I have been on the basal insulins for about ten years. Usually Lantus, Levemir and most recently Tresiba (which for me was the best).I am now on a free pen from my doctor and it's called Basaglar.

It's exactly like Lantus. I take 30 units in the morning. Everything is good because I don't cheat. With Tresiba I only had to take 22. I love that one.

I was getting my insulin from my doctor. I'm hoping he has more samples for me when I see him in early August.

Just started a new Basaglar pen this morning. When I run out of that I have a Humalog quik pen in the fridge.

I have never only used a short acting insulin before (except when I was in the hospital and my body went into shock and besides the Lantus I needed a bolus of about 6 units of Humalog after my meals. The nurses would come and check me and if I hit over 200 I would get 3 units and if I was higher, they would give me a few more units.

My doctor once told me 'you know you could stay on Humalog and only use that". I said 'no, I like the one injection in the morning, been doing that for ten years"

But because once this Basaglar is used up and in case my doctor doesn't have any more samples I have to use the Humalog. I know eventually I'll have to buy the insulin but I have a big deductible and lately all the money goes to Alan's foot ulcer meds.

So if and when I go on Humalog how many units do I give myself? I know I can ask my doctor but I want to run it by you. I eat the same breakfast every day. A egg and ham sandwich with lettuce and tomator (costs one dollar at the local place) with a cup of coffee.

Lunch is always a grilled chicken on bed of lettuce and tomatoes with some sprouts, Or it's tuna or some kind of fish. No bread.

Supper is either fish, chicken or meat with a side of Bokchoy and some other veggie.

Before I go to bed I have some egg whites with cheese.

So do I give myself the same amount before each meal? I really don't know anything about Humalog because I never had to use that kind of insulin.

Thanks to anyone who can help me. You can pm me if you wish.

Thanks so much

melody
