Default Education and Care at Diagnosis

I was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes during my first pregnancy, but at the time I was producing a decent amount of insulin. During pregnancy I was micromanaged and after delivery my basal needs we're almost zero, so I just had to bolus. Boluses worked well and I rarely went over 200 without knowing why. I never saw numbers over 300. A1c at diagnosis was 5.9 and it dropped to 5.2 after diagnosis and insulin treatment.

Because control was so easy and because I was "already diabetic" by the time I saw my first endocrinologist outside the pregnancy context, I never got the standard crash course in managing diabetes, lifestyle recommendations, etc. I didn't need to focus much on my sugars, so I didn't push for it.

Fast forward to five years later (now) and I am crashing out of my honeymoon and feeling completely out of control. I feel like I'm managing someone else's diabetes and failing miserably. Average BG for the last month is 180 according to CGM. A1c is likely to shoot up at next measurement.

For those of you with "normal" diagnosis experiences in adulthood, what kind of care and education did you receive at the outset? As much detail as possible would be great, so that I know what to ask my Endo about it.

Thanks!
